1/ Today I took some thank-you cards and chocs for the staff at the hospital where my aunt was admitted for emergency surgery last week. I took some into the ED, one of the nurses did a little happy dance ❤️ and said I’d made her day - well, she made mine.

Brought a friend back from the Falkland Islands to cheer up my colleagues - seems to be working ❤️🐧🇫🇰
Vaccines work. Masks work. Lockdowns are sometimes necessary. Access to affordable healthcare/medicines is a human right. Immigrants are generally an asset. Equality/Diversity/Inclusion policies are a good idea. Abortion is sometimes needed to save life. Keep saying these things. Truth is important.
'the selection process for medical school can be seen as akin to selecting rugby players for a team. We have selected the best individual players, but they all happen to be outside backs and loose forwards.' 👏 👏👏 Wise words from surgeons Ros Pochin and John Mutu-Grigg #Equity #SystemicBias

If I post this here, no one will ever notice I posted it on Twitter first, right?
"Be Kind" is an affirmation to tell one's self. It should not be used to shield the powerful from the righteous anger of those of us affected by their terrible leadership and awful policies. Stop telling people to #BeKind. I'll "Be Kind" when they stop "Being Incompetent".

A nice thread to circulate to non-medical followers ⬇️ to which I’d add: 1) yes you can take analgesics before coming to ED, and 2) if you’ve injured an upper limb (especially below the elbow) take rings off asap! 3) take a mobile phone power bank to ED 4) wear a facemask!
Day 15 NHS advent calendar. Please share if you find it useful. TIME IS OFTEN A HEALER! Try to avoid the ‘Amazon culture’ of everything needing to be sorted now. 1/7
Cracking start to 2025 ❤️ Happy New Year, try not to lose sight of beauty in all the anger and despair that can sometimes feel like it is overwhelming, especially on SoMe
A growing problem --- fake papers polluting systematic reviews. And interesting point that the gold-standard protocols that Cochrane is developing to weed out untrustworthy studies, are too much of an effort for systematic-review authors looking at 100s of papers. www.science.org/content/arti...
‘Systematic reviews’ that aim to extract broad conclusions from many studies are in peril
Fake papers are “poisoning the well” for these gold-standard syntheses, researchers say

I love this time of year in the Falklands, with all the young birds and animals. If young snipe aren’t called snippets, they should be!
Busy few days here in the #Falklandislands - when you’re the sole anaesthetist/intensivist, it doesn’t take much extra OOH work to add up! Satisfying, though, and pleased with the initial response for our recent assurance visit
Sterile gowns for spinal anaesthesia – environmental cost without clinical gain: a reply A local survey of 202 anaesthetists found that 88% would consider omitting a sterile gown. There was 95% face mask compliance (elective). #AnSky #MedSky https://buff.ly/4fBaPU0 https://buff.ly/3Ze85F9
As I’ve become older I’ve realised more how experience can be different as a female in any “career track” particularly when it comes to family planning, and would have such different advice for young women wanting families and a career now!
This 2021 paper "The female medicla workforce" covers the basics of gender bias, and discusses isses relevent to anaesthetists such as menstruation, fertility, pregnancy and menopause associationofanaesthetists-publications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Can those of us working in resuscitation take a pause to say “thank you” to Cliff Reid - his post today on the other platform re challenging behaviours in resus is a kind & polite masterclass in this often neglected aspect of emergency care Kudos mate! threadreaderapp.com/thread/18581...
Bullying & harassment costs NHS £2 billion annually. Shocking but sadly unsurprising. The hesitation to call out racism, compared to sexism, shows the urgent need for antiracism & compassionate leadership as it saves costs & lives #NHS #AntiRacism #CompassionateLeadership #Bullying #Harassment

Great 🧵on why iodine is used as a contrast medium in radiology 👇
1/14 🤔 Why do we use iodine as an intravenous contrast agent? The answer requires a review of the composition of the human body and a brief tour of one of my favorites, the Periodic Table of Elements.

Making the move here has demonstrated that the real treasure was the friends we made along the way… it was the network that was important, not the website hosting it. It’s been a case of quality over quantity of followers, and I’m glad to see more and more quality people now making the move too.
