Which work? Calling for gay people to be stoned to death? Blaming airplane crashes on black pilots? Anti-vax bullshit? Election denialism? Pushing Great Replacement Theory? Kirk’s murder is awful and ominous for this country. But no, we don’t need to honor him or “continue his work.”

Charlie Kirk spent his life‘s work and all of his energy and time targeting out-groups while arguing for a world in which gun massacres would be easy to enact, plentiful, and inevitable, and he became famous and wealthy doing it, and we’re now not supposed to mention that because it’s not polite.

Let’s make one thing clear from the start: Charlie Kirk was the victim of a shooting in a country where he, along with other right-wing extremist influencers, have been inciting violence for years. — Kirk is neither a martyr nor a hero, he is a cause.

On one hand I'd love to see Aucklanders gather to protest outside Destiny Church about their hateful shit. On the other hand those assholes are clearly just waiting for the opportunity to get into a fight. There's clearly many there who'd love nothing more.

When whānau and tamariki are having to hide behind locked doors while a crowd tries to break them down you have to stop calling it a difference of opinion you shouldn't do anything about.

Two attacks, using force (people were injured at the library, "breaking through" police barricades here), against the queer community of Auckland in one day by Destiny. We are owed an explanation as to why there are thus far zero arrests. There may BE a good explanation, but if so we are owed it.

Auckland Rainbow Parade: Destiny Church members disrupt march, storm Ponsonby Rd This is the second Destiny church story today filled with violence and in which Tamaki gets several paragraphs to spout his venom. Do better Herald. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/auckland-...

Democracy dies in darkness. National are shoving Bill's through under urgency, limiting select committee input, and as we saw over the summer, limiting the opportunity for public submissions. They've also fired science advisors and not filled the PM's science advisor role. #nzpol

Govt smashes record for laws passed without select committee scrutiny

The Government has forced more legislation all the way through Parliament under urgency in its first 400 days than any since at least 1987.

The reveal that Auror provides police with direct access to their customer data without warrants or review procedures shows how supermarkets and big box retailers are leading a shift towards monitoring every customer as a potential criminal. theconversation.com/supermarket-...

Australian supermarkets have responded to retail crime with overt technological surveillance: body cameras issued to staff (also now adopted by Woolworths in New Zealand), digitally tracking customer movement through stores, automated trolley locks and exit gates to prevent people leaving without paying.

Supermarkets may now be at the forefront of a technological shift in the shopping experience. Moving towards a surveillance culture where every customer is monitored as a potential thief is reminiscent of the ways global airport security changed after 9/11.

Absolutely no one should come to the US for the next four years if they can help it, for anything. Cons, weddings, vacations, etc. The danger is in the wild unpredictability of the federal government and getting in when federal agencies at our borders have been given the all clear for bigotry.

so hey, not to be That Guy, but remember how SFF fans called for a boycott of Chengdu Worldcon on the basis of the CCP’s actions in Xinjiang and China potentially not being safe for certain authors? are we going to have a similar discussion about Seattle Worldcon given the circumstances, or -?

The EO defines biological male and female by the size of the reproductive cell each produces. But the fetus is asexual at conception. Bipotential (sexually indeterminate) gonads start to form the 5th week after fertilization, and both male and female ducts form, regardless of X or Y chromosomes.

The Trump executive order against trans people defines "female" and "male" *at conception.* Not birth. This is fetal personhood language (in addition to being scientifically inaccurate). www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

I've seen some people bitching about the colour gradient in Wicked, comparing it to the technicolour of the original film. I haven't seen whether John Chu or anyone else involved has addressed it but the colour choice seems so obvious???

Getting real tired of *certain people* whining to *me* about how they want to riot, why aren't we roiting, etc etc. And I get it, I do, we're all mad, and when it kicks off I'll be there. In the meantime, what tangible steps are you taking to protect the people who need/will need it most?
