Kids today are so spoiled just by being able to switch video games on their TV without getting off the couch. Back in my day you had to walk 10 feet there and back - uphill both ways - and pray you didn't have a scratched disc or a cartridge that needed blowing
Just a little reminder to everyone: Algorithms are useless. It's very hard to find cool stuff without being shown it by someone else. So if you find something cool - a band, a game, a video essay or anything else - share it and tell people about it. And thanks to anyone who does! You're cool!
When someone asks me what my indie game "design pillars" are

i feel like the game Joust should be much more influential than it is. i love pressing X to flap
SIT FORWARD. of the Devil - Episode 3 is coming this Fall.
tentatively about here? this is 40 meters tall (was 32) with currently two heights at which there can be doors in walls. i may add a third, higher one. i like the shape, and the taller arches are nice because you can see sky earlier during your climb.
Brand new Dev Dive! I talked to Michael Brough and Tara MacAlister about 868-BACK, and what they went through to get the game released. This is a development story about how passion and creativity can fight through many struggles. @smestorp.bsky.social @finjico.bsky.social youtu.be/EB2iJ4DQx_Y

Sorry asset store kiddies, this is what real game dev looks like
I went to the countryside and did a little game jam last weekend. Finally got around to make a proper game out of all the oscilloscope stuff I got figured out years ago. This is snek, two player versus, one button per player. Eat the other players tail to win.
I want to see Microsoft itself collapse while the studios it essentially holds at gunpoint are able to get away (relatively) unscathed. I would rather have a games industry with Double Fine, Ninja Theory and Compulsion in it than ever see an Xbox again
Last year I started building a #Pico-8 prototype. Cyberpunk dungeon crawler. ASCII art graphics, bathed in bright terminal colors. You’re a hacker, got caught in a mainframe all Neuromancer style. Gotta fight intrusion countermeasures, escape the system. Might return to this at some point
I turned pinball into Jump King. -Two buttons. -One vertical world shaped by the history of ideas. -No score. -No safety net. Every shot is a choice. Every fall is your fault. It’s called Fallosophy. Would you keep climbing?

May the death of the Games Industry usher in a golden era of Games as Art... perhaps then we can stop pretending game developers are anything but broke desperate creatives, like folks in every other medium
I wrote a manifesto for making games, and (not) selling them, for #manifestojam illomens.itch.io/no-one-is-go...
I don't think there's ever been a time where straightforward videogame remakes (ie. not adaptation, which are always interesting) were more redundant that right now. It's so easy to load up an emulator and plug in a controller and just play the game without some hidden injection of AI slop.
The last time anybody designed something I liked

When it comes to reminding us all that there are still people out here making REAL indie games, nobody does it better than @warpdoor.com

here's my list of correct game design opinions and here's a copy of the list in case you throw it in the trash
Just for the record, Tom Sennett Games is 100% anti-"weapon durability". Heck, I don't even think you should have limited item slots. If I like playing a game a certain way with certain things then just give me those things and let me play that way, don't force me to play other less fun ways
Marble Madness is another game I am begging my fellow indie game developers to rip off as hard as they can. Still looks and handles great imo
