Texas isn't a red state. It's a state held hostage by gerrymandering and voter suppression. Hell, earlier this week they announced they're shutting down half the voting centers in Tarrant County (that's Fort Worth, 2.2 million people) and kicked everyone out of the hearing who wanted to comment.

This is a sentimental essay about politics, which I know isn't the fashion, and yet the editors at @newrepublic.com let me write something personal about the Lone Star State. Link in the replies.

Jimothy and disabled people deserve so much more and we should be careful to not equate popularity with genuine support. My apologies if any of this came off as aggressive, but I haven’t seen anyone voice this concern on this specific topic yet and I wanted to offer my perspective.

Jimothy isn’t causing our society to be more accommodating to wildlife, disabled or not, he is being commodified into merch and is the source of humor and internet sensationalism. I love this little guy, I think he is silly, but I’m glad we don’t treat disabled people like we treat Jimothy.

I get the sentiment, but also most people don’t “care” about Jimothy. They are entertained by him and his popularity is going to get him killed. I would prefer we not compare disabled animals to disabled people because we don’t treat either with dignity or respect.
