Regardless of the politics of an individual race, I always find it heartening when the candidate with a lopsided money advantage doesn't win.

Happy International Owl Awareness Day! Please enjoy this photograph of ornithologist Herbert Brown (r) with an elf owl, the world’s smallest owl
Sick and tired of journalists asking politicians how they *feel* about the Bad Thing that just happened. Ask them what they're going to *do* about it!

Today is Venn Day, in celebration of the mathematician John Venn, born on this day in 1834. To commemorate the occasion, here’s a poem in the form of a Venn Diagram.
A lovely little bit of physics that you might have spotted if you ever play with a slinky. We should all play more, because we should all embrace our curiosity. And finding out how the physical world works is fun!
Jack Dorsey: I wish that BlueSky became the place where all the cool and interesting people hang out.

Well, actually, kinda, yeah, close to what happened. It's not for nothing that Jack Dorsey, who started the place and was on its board, basically ran away when the trans folks and furries scared off all the crypto bros he assumed would be the natural demographic here (they went to Nostr instead).
and indeed many of us have already done that, seamlessly transitioning to eg @eurosky.social from which we continue to post but from and to non-US servers
I’m (re)posting this from the Mu.social web app, not Bluesky, and my account is hosted by Eurosky, not Bluesky. TLDR: you’re probably reading this on Bluesky (unless you’re reading my bridged Mastodon account), but it isn’t Bluesky. edit - and guess what else?? 🤩
It’s already here (as web app, phone app is under development): mu.social
Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts are amazing even now. He animated the sequence by himself for more than four months -- without computers or even an easy way to check his work. We're looking into how he did it: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/how-ray-ha...
Hey could you toss our football back over the fence for us WHAT IS THIS A SOCIALIST TRAP
There are two wolves. One always lies. One controls the lever of trolley track. They're in a state of superposition inside a box. On the trolley are infinite monkeys at infinite typewriters going to an infinite hotel. The trolley must first travel halfway, but before that a quarterway, and so on...

I don't really have an objection to the CEO saying Bluesky is open to all; it's kind of his job to do that. But as others have pointed out, the design of the site means it's harder for trolls/bots/chuds *and also* influencers/hypebeasts to get traction. The "bubble" here is actually normal humans.
If I were a social media CEO I would simply avoid alienating my users
I already moved off Bluesky PDS to Northsky when I found out about ICE. And there are alternatives now. Blacksky, Eurosky. If they want turn this place into another cesspool - it would be sad, but it won't be the end.
I adore the work of the genius that is @nellucnhoj.bsky.social and I was lucky enough to get this for my duck-obsessed other half’s birthday
For the academics out there who are wondering about how to deal with rejection (and aren’t we all):
