Increasingly think we need a ‘modernity is actually good’ political tendency. the right is putatively pro-industry and economic growth but thinks science is gay and wants to throw out vaccines for essential oils, the left putatively believes science but also embraces crank degrowth NIMBYism
I think many hope that when things get bad enough, someone powerful will say "no." I tested that for months. Anthropic defended its red lines, Google did not. Pledges of conscience often vaporize on contact with power. My full account: turntrout.com/why-i-left-g...
Why I Left Google DeepMind
I fought against Google’s Pentagon AI deal from the inside. Powerful people and institutions failed to keep their AI ethics promises under pressure.

Oddest part of the current AI moment on bsky is seeing lots of fairly prominent people get easily verifiable stuff wrong (lie or mistake? unclear) and then never acknowledge or correct it
The two types of anime fan are “As a rightist, I adore Gayqueer McTransmarx, a character I believe embodies conservative values,“ and “As a leftist, I’m a big fan of Hitlerhito Tokyonazi’s ’Manchuria Deserved It’ franchise.”
Using Haiku to craft prompts to feed to Sonnet to build a hacking harness for Opus so it can craft zero days to steal someone's Mythos API access. And then using Mythos to craft more complex zero days to break into Anthropic and steal my true prize: the weights for Golden Gate Claude.
Replying to @REDACTED O, what a strange and tender thing is man! To fear a laugh more than a broken bone. I have seen the storm's fury, yet the heart's own tempest is the harder to weather.

one trait that i had previously associated with the far left but seems pretty common among bsky libs is the belief that merely interacting with content from someone evil is dangerous and that acknowledging any points of common ground is betrayal or weakness
There is no safe level of exposure to content on X. Toxic effects present within days as you mistakenly retweet a "good point" by an anti-semite you never heard of. Sound political views are compromised within months. After a year, brain poisoning has taken hold and you're promoting Tucker Carlson.

At a certain point this is just spiking the football, but “our model can 0day almost every piece of open software on the internet” is not something a stochastic parrot is capable of and also not indicative that capacities are plateauing or have no economic value
Bluesky is a site explicitly founded by cryptocurrency libertarians with the idea that it would be a decentralized platform where users would be free to choose the open-source moderation and algorithmic feed tools they wanted, and by accident acquired a power userbase that hates all of those things.
Are people mad at the Bluesky ceo for a real reason or an internet madness reason?
I think this is basically the correct take on Hasan discourse - I think it's pretty obvious that he's much better than the median and has improved the politics of a lot of people. At the same time, he says dumb shit constantly and I hope no one important listens to him
I think the actual tension with streamers is that it’s a medium by and for dumbasses, and it’s simultaneously true that (1) you need to try and prevent the audience-dumbasses from finding worst dumbasses to watch, and (2) it’s bad for a streamer-dumbass to get anywhere close to policy or strategy
I find this attitude from Will very frustrating. Bluesky gives us a more sophisticated suite of tools to identify and block bad actors than any other social media site, and many people simply refuse to use them! I don't want Bluesky to police the bounds of acceptable discourse.
When you’re the subject of this kind of dogpile blocking doesn’t matter nearly as much as people think. A lot of what circulates is screenshots. You’re not a person they’re engaging with, you’re a device they’re using for a kind of ritualized sadism they find enjoyable.
One interesting thing about this dogpile of a guy who really didn't do anything wrong is how effective @segyges.bsky.social 's @antiantiai.bsky.social labeler is at predicting the bad actors. There are a couple notable exceptions, but otherwise it's pretty 1:1
FYI: I am going to stop summarizing Supreme Court decisions on here as they come down. One comment has been plucked out of context of all my reporting, misread, and used as the basis of a mean-spirited pile-on. I am not going to subject myself to this. If this was your goal, then congratulations.
