El Nino thread! 🌊 My Key Takeaways: 1. This event is well on its way to being a very strong event rarely seen in the last 75 years. 2. Right now, it's most likely not the strongest on record. 3. The warming of the nino3.4 region due to climate change does not add to El Nino strength!

Cairngorms wildfire update: Police Scotland have declared a major incident. The village of Nethy Bridge is now being evacuated. Areas around Loch Morlich / Glenmore also remain closed.

Sea Surface Temperatures around the UK and in the Mediterranean are some >5-6°C above where they should be for the time of year. A rather severe & potentially catastrophic marine heatwave developing as a result of continued heatwaves.

1000 evaluators given identical resumes & told candidate used AI. Only difference on resumes was candidate’s name: Emily vs James. Study found women using AI are evaluated as less competent than men who use AI...To evaluators, women’s AI use signaled inability, while men’s AI use signaled initiative

Women’s use of AI is perceived as a sign of incompetence, while men’s use of AI is seen as an indication of initiative. 🤦🏻‍♂️

From 36,000km up you can see a heatwave happen. This video tracks land surface temp across Europe during last week's record heat, as the ground baked under one of the most intense, widespread heatwaves the continent has seen. Green turns to orange, then deep red 🔴 as the heat takes hold. [1/3]

A lot of media coverage of the ‘AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.

A screenshot from here: https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2025-02-07-inside-herculaneum-scroll-seen-first-time-almost-2000-years

It explains that the machine learning involves only the detection of ink

When reality surpasses fiction! Top: fictional forecast for August 2050, broadcast by French TV in 2014 to warn about the consequences of global warming. Bottom: Real French forecast for yesterday, June 22, 2026.

Really pleased to see this paper out! We show that collective intelligence emerges in wild birds, using radar traces from flocks of migratory hirundines. Many wild social animals might benefit from similar processes, but we could also see Allee effects as migratory populations decline.

The WISDOM OF CROWDS emerges in flocks of thousands of migrating songbirds! Excited to share our work published by @aaas.org in Science Advances! doi.org/10.1126/scia...

In this sense, I've always sort of hated the "standing on the shoulders of giants" trope in science. We are standing on a mountain of sand. Every grain holds the whole thing up. Thousands upon thousands of experiments, discoveries, reports, case studies, theses, etc all go into every "discovery"

This is the whole thing. Basic, wonky, weird, non-applied, whatever you want to call it, science is usually the eventual foundation of everything you know as "technology" or "medicine". It's not even a case of "if they succeed" - the investment is in the voluminous incremental advancements

"Right now, in some underfunded lab, a scientist is chasing a question that sounds pointless.... No one can say if they will succeed. But a century of experience says that funding people to do this work is a good bet. If we stop making that bet, we will pay for it in cures no one will know to miss."

Scientific journal editor here: If you're invited to peer review an article and you can't do it, please just click "no." That tells me "this person can't do it, I should invite someone else." Otherwise the system waits 3 weeks to tell me that you didn't respond and I should invite someone else.
