Today, we’re publicly sharing that Dual Wield Studio has reached the difficult decision to conduct layoffs. If you’re hiring, please reach out in response to this post or via email to hello@dualwieldstudio.com - our priority is ensuring everyone impacted can find a great new job.

Today, we’re publicly sharing that Dual Wield Studio has reached the difficult decision to conduct layoffs. This is not done lightly; our core ethos prioritizes taking care of our team above all.
Candidly, layoffs reflect a failure of leadership sufficiently planning and acting in service of the team.

Last year, our current Leadership became aware of our company having operated at a significant income deficit for several years. We informed our team of this concern, and did what we could to mitigate it as much as possible, including the seniormost highest-paid members of Leadership deferring significant owed pay in order to extend more funds to our team.

Despite this, without more drastic action, our trajectory endangered our ability to reasonably continue to fairly compensate our team or support them in the event of financial insolvency.
Layoffs are that drastic action.

Full-time employees impacted by the layoff will receive 6 months severance pay, 6 months medical benefits, and 6 months of tailored outplacement support, with comparable severance offered to our incubation business project contributor. If we cannot continue to fairly employ people, we believe we should at least do what we can to help them find their next job.

We’re heartbroken to send away folks who have been part of what makes our team so special, and are committed to doing all we can to sustain Dual Wield Studio by learning from our mistakes to do better.

If you’re hiring, these are some marvelous folks for you to consider – please reach out in response to this post, or to hello@dualwieldstudio.com

So I'm one of the folks that's been hit by the layoffs! 🤪 My time at DWS has been a fun one, and I got to work with and alongside some really wonderful folks, several of whom have been affected. Which means I'm available for work if you need someone that's good at BizDev and competent at editing!

Trying to summarize attending my first Licensing Expo; one thing I keep coming back to is that I don’t disparage folks just doing their job but it really does make a difference when people actually care about the IP & stuff they’re working on. Painfully apparent when folks only care about $$$ :/

What's highlighted here - and now true of many companies - is not only is RTO being forced, it's being forced at the /employee's/ expense, without $$$ being given for moves, a new commute, or better salary. You're taking a pay cut to be in an office you don't want to be in. It's doubly punishing.

Alright, I'm going to talk about one of my biggest reasons for unionizing on the Arena team. Forced relocation, aka "RTO" (Return to Office), "WFH protections" (Work From Home protections), or more recently "Ways of Working." Buckle in for a thread.

When meeting someone new, finding out that they happily shill for generative AI is such an immediate disappointment. The potential of wanting to make a new friend withers and instead feels like a betrayal speedrun; like, oh, you don’t want to think for yourself AND lack strong moral alignment? Gross

Kickstarter officially banning adult content now. Knew this was coming, but it still sucks to have yet another part of the internet that I've been explicitly evicted from. Digital gentrification is exhausting.

Screenshot of Kickstarter's new rules against mature content, in which everything pornographic is banned. It's a long document that's formatted in a way that I can't copy and paste all the text that's in it, but the first is that all point and anything sexual is now banned. This part of the document outlines how even self censoring your own work will not work, because even the implication of sex is too much. Even in prose works. This document is confusing because it says that erotic comics ARE allowed... you just can't show sex acts or genitals or try to arouse people. Also you can make sex toys, just so long as they're not for sexual gratification. This is how Kickstarter's email began:

"Hello,
Kickstarter has always been a home for bold, boundary-pushing creative work, including mature content projects like romance novels, nude art books, and provocative comics. Creators working in this space are a valued part of our community, and that hasn’t changed." And yet it definitely has changed.

I have been very fortunate with my therapy experiences but this morning had a chat with one who managed to (among other ills) imply that things like depression & neurodivergence were just a failure of mental discipline! 🙃 Fuckin YIKES

Dear spam email sender, I'm going to jettison this message but I need you to know that your name being Sokolov *did* make me pause because I imagined Snake in MGS3 saying it. Anyway, generative AI is still unethical garbage and I will never be interested, have the day you deserve <3
