unlike the books on jonestown and ruby ridge i just read, which inspired me to feel intensely sympathetic towards the victims, place myself in their shoes, understand how they arrived there etc, this book on love has won just reaffirmed my prior opinion- bunch of egregious morons + appalling drunks

Fantastic news! The FDA has approved the first mRNA flu vaccine. Using mRNA technology will make it easier to update each season’s flu vaccine to keep up with new variants.

It's going to be interesting to see how the actions of people who wanted unfettered use of the military and believe that checks and balances are superseded in the Constitution will be assessed given the record of murder, depleted capacity, and strategic loss they leave behind as their legacy.<
>Especially as they thought they could pull off "easy" wins w/ special operations, airpower, and sea/land standoff alone without committing large ground forces acting all the while like the "Terry Toughtalk" persona would keep the base behind them.
Days before the death of Edwin Jeovanny Lopez Cornejo, ICE officials did not report the death of another man who’d been detained at Delaney Hall — because they had technically “released” him in the middle of a medical emergency, Rep. Rob Menendez (D-NJ) alleged. www.huffpost.com/entry/delane...

The modern Republican Party has completed its transformation into antebellum Democrats. A party of insane white supremacist aristocrats supported by broke rubes who can feel superior about the circumstances of their birth and nothing more. No merit top to bottom

Sanders: The irony is that the proper criticism of communism is that the Soviet Union was an authoritarian society. And then you’ve got the most authoritarian president in the history of this country. So I suppose when he says, “I’d be a great communist,” yeah, I think there’s some truth to that
One important way of doing this is going to be shrinking our global military footprint in a big way. Which brings me to my proposal: end CENTCOM's entire presence within the first 100 days.
I know it sucks, but Dems have got to be prepared to inherit a munitions-and-readiness hole that is going to be expensive to fill, but which will need to be filled. Hardly the only such hole, but it will be a big one.
So as much as I am a "the US Navy is the load-bearing pillar of the global economy" guy, um...basically yes, I am on board with this. Basically all of the regional players suck, everyone should be decarbonizing anyway, otherwise there's nothing of value in the region save the Suez.
One important way of doing this is going to be shrinking our global military footprint in a big way. Which brings me to my proposal: end CENTCOM's entire presence within the first 100 days.
Could another global power or set of powers step in here to do something? Sure. Will they? Pretty obviously no. Do you see a constituency in the EU to build a large navy to defend global shipping? I don't. And the PRC *really* does not give a s*** if other people live or die.
The problem is that as we're seeing with the Strait of Hormuz, "the USA forfeits its global ambitions" does not lead to a new age of peace and sunshine, but to global recession and instability. The Strait of Hormuz is not the only load-bearing instance of US power backstopping modern economies.
I think the traditional answer is actually "forfeit your global ambitions because you can't afford them and voters won't make the sacrifices necessary to restore them," unfortunately
Gonna need everyone to open their books to the page on 'path dependency' now. Why would you think that giving Iran what it wants will result in a free and open strait now, when Iran very loudly wants to impose restrictions and tolls on the strait?
Hormuz is closed because the United States launched an unprovoked war. The most plausible course of action to open it again is for the US to withdraw from the region. Causation really is not liberals strong suit

I mean, the only passenger jet you could do that with would be the DC-9 with the rear stairs, you'd need to disable the DB Cooper vane that makes it so you can't open then in flight any more, and I don't know if that's even a feature on more modern versions. So, not even possible happening.
