Ha! Had this very thing arise for my ACH presentation. Abstract said we'd use Omeka, and that didn't end up working for what we were doing, so we switched to Dokuwiki. I reflected on this more extensively during the project itself and mentioned it in my presentation.

The only taxidermied blue whale in the world, 1865 CE, now housed at the Natural History Museum in Sweden. The public was allowed to enter the whale up until a couple was found having sex inside it. Now the whale’s jaws are opened only for special occasions, such as Swedish election days.

Our classes are creating publications that we'll share publicly, and we're exploring layers of GenAI protection: hosting everything behind a web AI firewall, using CAPTCHA + Glaze, managing email requests (rather than posting openly). When women do obtain tenure, the effects extend well beyond their own careers. Beyond the direct promotion of the qualifying candidate, departments experience on average one additional female promotion over the subsequent fifteen years, a substantial expansion of the female PhD pipeline, and improved retention and career progression among female doctoral graduates. These effects are concentrated in departments where women are underrepresented, but not entirely absent, suggesting that a minimal female presence is a precondition for trickle-down effects to materialize, whether through mutual support, departmental influence, or other channels that require women not to be entirely isolated.

And if you can't or aren't yet willing to switch, you can still reduce your impact by avoiding animal products on specific days. I've not yet been able to kick my cheese and egg habit, nor am I certain about the vegan (often plastic) replacements for leather, but I am conscious of it.

It's a point I've been trying to make for a long time: there is no good way to meet even 10% of current demand for animal products. They trash the living world, whichever way you do it. If you want to reduce your impact, switch to a plant-based diet. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

SQ: How do I explain to people that AI is not information even if it's information-shaped? If only there were some ancient metaphor we could lean on, maybe something in the shape of a horse that isn't a horse and in fact contains dangerous things. Nothing comes to mind.
