Happy Saint Patrick!🍀 Meet Saccharomyces cerevisiae—the yeast behind beer!🦠It ferments sugars into alcohol & CO₂ in an oxygen-free environment. At Bordeaux Imaging Center, Isabelle Svahn captured it up close using scanning electron microscopy!🔬 👉france-bioimaging.org/node/bordeaux/

"Teaching of genetics tends to begin with Mendelian traits, presumably because they are deemed easier to understand. This introduces misperceptions about genetic determinism, encouraging linear perspectives on genotype-phenotype relations." A call to embrace complexity by @philipcball.bsky.social.🧪

Should biology put complexity first?

The dictum “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler” poses a problem for biology. How simply can it be told without doing damage to its complex nature? The answer might be foun...

#BPS2025 is approaching! ✨🔬🧪 I will be presenting a poster on some TPE metabolic imaging and on a little bit of Phasor FLIM analysis. All recent and unpublished data. Sun Feb 16th - B548 Find me if you are there and interested and want to chat about NADH, FPs, FLIM, or FCS (always up for that).

I don't want a video explaining how to do the thing. I want step-by-step instructions in a plain text document, on a single page, ideally that I can see all of without scrolling while using a reasonably big font.

Trying to find an old classic paper that was discussing how in science changes of scale induce a change of the rules, e.g explaining that chemistry is not applied physics, biology is not applied chemistry etc. Does it ring a bell with anyone ?

A question for membrane folks: should I expect a change of 3-5% percent in unsaturated fatty acids affect membrane viscosity? It is typically what people measure in cold shocks in bacteria but I find strange that such a small change would have an important effect
