This is my YMCA and it could probably use some renovation and densification, tbh. The signs are ridiculous.
A yard sign's anti-housing message echoes Silver Spring’s painful history.
Don’t know who to credit for this. But it is how I feel.
Yeah. The Birthright Citizenship win *is* a win, but the fact that it wasn't 9-0 should worry you and the fact that it was a split decision should TERRIFY AND MOTIVATE YOU.
Donald Trump came one vote away from getting the Supreme Court to say that the 14th Amendment does not guarantee birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented and temporary immigrants, a view held only by fringe far-right nativists until VERY recently. This is shocking. I am stunned.
one unironically good thing about american national character and legal system is that an internal hukou system would be doa here, despite lots of people very clearly wanting that, even if they won't say it explicitly. easier to imagine the union ending than that happening.
the “practice having no fear” mural of alex pretti on nicollet ave in minneapolis is finished, just a few blocks north of where he was killed by border patrol during operation metro surge. the inclusion of a medicine wheel makes me wonder if a native artist did this, couldn’t find a signature
new mural going up on nicollet ave in whittier, minneapolis depicting alex pretti filming federal agents with his phone during operation metro surge before he was shot and killed, just 4 blocks south of here
I think the bear case for AI leading to scientific advancement is that a lot of shit has to happen in the actual world, and that takes place on world of atoms timelines. Like you gotta actually put the shit in the Petri dishes and beakers and whatnot, the choke point is not running regressions.
The comparison I heard was data centers using the same amount of water as golf courses, and for that I was all, my brother in Christ, let me tell you what I think we should do with golf courses
But didn't you hear? Chatbots that steal actual writers' work only use the same amount of water as huge tracts of farmland. And since obviously we can't assess which one provides more to human wellbeing we can't be against data centers unless we're against farms too.
As a science fiction writer I really fucking resent tech bros for ruining the phrase "artificial intelligence." 80 years of it being all about cool androids and interesting computers destroyed by five years of "Spicy autocorrect making everything shittier for money." NEVER FORGIVE.
. @aoc.bsky.social responds to this trend: "BOOOOO" "This race to try to see who can be exempt from participating in society is not a conversation that I'm interested in," she tells me, calling it an uninspiring message. "I'm a Great Society Democrat, and I believe in building that together."
New: Tax cuts are the HOTTEST new idea for Democrats Booker & Van Hollen (2028 prospects) unveil big tax-cut plans. Porter says exempt $100K in income from CA taxes. K.L. Bottoms says exempt teachers from GA taxes. Pitched as an answer to cost-of-living struggles. www.nbcnews.com/politics/ele...
Did I open up PowerPoint intending to chat with it??? I did not?????
every few months, americans are asked to resume their banquet and pretend a shooting didn't just happen
For #MoCo neighbors, @montgomery4all.bsky.social hosted a candidate questionnaire for council member and county executive aspirants. The answers are quite illuminating! Check them and get educated before you vote #housing #transit www.montgomery4all.org/2026-candida...

When you invite regular folks at community festivals to tell you about what land use and transit futures they want, this is what they say. @montgomery4all.bsky.social #MoCo
Counterpoint: That people are willing to take time and gather in places that are actively hostile to gathering shows how motivated people are to fight back against fascism. This is good.
According to our latest poll, Montgomery County voters say the age and quality of homes in the county is a problem. They're also more likely to support pro-homes candidates, especially voters under 45 and renters.

Lol at The Post sending me a print copy of Sunday's paper with this garbage, which convinced me to cancel even my online-only sub once and for all.
in case you were wondering how far right the WaPo has gone, they're running a piece today by Ayaan Hirsi Ali about Mamdani's faith
Lots of people seem to forget: It is Ramadan, which would affect the pattern of life of everyone in Iran.

The world could be such a nice place if we allowed it. It's all so goddamn unnecessary. There's no need for any of it. It's so beautiful here. It should be so cool to be alive
look if a Democrat wants me to be really fired up about voting for them, they will promulgate the Crimes Against Humanity Reparations Act which gives US citizenship to everyone targeted by the Trump administration.

There are bobcats removing the remaining ice piles at the mostly snow free transit center. Meanwhile I'm still "vehicular walking" in the partially clear right lane of a 6 lane road around my bus stop.

Look I know that “diversity is our strength” is cringe but: diversity is our strength. People who come from distinct cultural practices actively serving in community with one another. What a blessing to live in a world where that happens.
The thing about all these people they hate — the Somalis, the Haitians — are some of the most generous people you’ve ever met. Whose cultures are predicated on hospitality, whose kindness is entirely unmatched.
