I'm looking for a post-doc to work on the interaction between past hydrological changes and vegetation in a disturbed peatland, using paleoecological and modelling approaches. The post-doc duration is 18 months and start date is any time before Jan 2027. DM if you are interested / have questions! 🌿🧪

In my postdoc, I've been trying to learn about deep learning models for wetland mapping after my PhD coming from using random forest and calculating metrics. It's been difficult to get an intuitive grasp of what a #deeplearning model like U-Net is actually doing with the input data
Sunny days in the Adirondacks really make it easy to validate and map wetlands We also got the great experience of visiting some old growth forested peatlands as well!
I am looking forward to reading this: Multi-Decadal Dynamics of Wetland Methane Emissions Revealed by Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning. By Qing Zhu and colleagues, including @avnimalh0tra.bsky.social and @sparklemalone.bsky.social onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Had the great opportunity to visit a wetland restoration project conducted by Ducks Unlimited. The project has worked on converting an old “muck” farm back to a wetland by removing tile drains, diverting hydrology, and planting hydrophytic vegetation. Super excited to see the progress so far!
Ryan (and me) are hiring a PhD student! Sweden is a great country to do a PhD, see the link or ask us for more details, or share with potential students!
We are hiring a PhD student at Umeå University to work on GHG dynamics in boreal streams and groundwater. See the following advertisement and reach out with any questions! www.umu.se/en/work-with... @grocherros.bsky.social
Come join the Tumber-Dávila Lab as our next Lab manager! We have been fortunate to have Grady Welsh for the last two years, but he will soon be off to bigger and better things pursuing a PhD. While we could never replace Grady, we are eager to hire someone new to help support our ever-growing lab!
The Tumber-Dávila Lab, Dartmouth College Dept. of Environmental Science, is seeking a full-time lab manager/research assistant to contribute to research on belowground ecosystems response to global change. COME JOIN US! 🧪🌳🌲🌎 searchjobs.dartmouth.edu/postings/84449
We are recruiting a postdoc to study wetland plant-soil-microbe interactions using isotope labeling in our greenhouse at LLNL with me and Erin Nuccio as part of a multidisciplinary project. Experience with wetland plants and SIP a plus. Please share! www.linkedin.com/posts/activi...

I've got some expanded thoughts on yesterday's State of the Science event.
If you use @ameriflux.bsky.social data it is funded by DOE environmental science. Please write your Congressional reps and inform about the values of these programs to America and the world
In case you’re interested in what’s targeted for termination in the Department of Energy budget, it looks like it is the entire environmental half of Biological and Environmental Research:
This is an absolute disaster. If we don't stop this, they will turn NSF into a pawn of the Trump administration. There will be no research on climate, biodiversity, or anything that isn't eugenics or AI or how to more efficiently destroy the planet for profit. This cannot be allowed to happen.
Exclusive: NSF faces radical shake-up as officials abolish its 37 divisions
Changes seen as a response to presidential directives on what research to fund

Recently, all the AAAS Science & Tech Policy Fellows at EPA were terminated from our positions with little notice and for no clear reason. This effectively ended a partnership that had been going since 1980 and which had brought hundreds of scientists to the EPA as fellows, many of whom stayed. 1/7

The NIH indirect rate change discourse has been very eye-opening. I think me and other grad students are fairly unaware about how academic funding works. When we hear about overhead it sounds like an exorbitant cost. But now we’re taking the worst crash course on how all parts of research are funded
