The European response to the #Ceuta crisis will go down in history as an own goal that emboldened Europe’s adversaries. Instead of showing solidarity, Italy & co sought to punish it. Now, with the vast majority of arrivals already returned, the failure wasn’t border control but European solidarity.

If students are simply uninterested in the core bargain of a class like this, it’s hard to know what to do. You teach the material because you think it’s important they know it; they don’t give a shit, but want the credential; and the university wants their money. Your main option is “pretend”.

woof ≈80% of assignments this summer term have essentially been just raw chatgpt/claude output, including assignments that required designing stuff in illustrator/affinity/canva. The battle is lost for asynchronous online courses.

That even *progressive* Americans seemingly don't have this instinct is almost as damning about America as anything Trump's done. It makes, say, the partisan gerrymandering both sides have indulged in far more understandable.

Why does planning an essay feel like you're doing all the work before doing the work, Grammarly? Because learning the subject, figuring out what you want to say, and planning out of the structure of how to say it *IS* the vast majority of the work of writing. Any writer knows this. You do too.

I know Calvin’s dad is already having a moment, but every terrible “outsource precious and fleeting moments with your children to tech so that you can spend more time on your work” pitch makes me think of that one strip I never really cared about as a kid, but care a lot about as an adult.

The Calvin and Hobbes strip where Calvin asks his dad to come play in the snow with him. His dad initially says no, because he has to work. Then, angry at himself, his Dad goes out to build a snowman with Calvin. As the Dad works into the night to make up for it, we see Calvin’s mum lifting him up to give one of the few, if only, kisses he ever gives his dad in the Calvin and Hobbes run. His dad is content. It’s a textless comic, and it’s lovely.

Disclosure for a long thread. 1) I am responsible for the adoption of GenAI in my organization. 2) AI enthusiasts call me an AI skeptic, and AI skeptics call me an AI enthusiast. So I humbly believe I am the right man for the job. I see this disconnect between employees and top leaders daily.

employers are pushing AI and it's making them individually more stupid with every passing day

Putins mercenaries’ man the shadow fleet. Through fake job interviews and more than 2000 crew lists Danwatch and our international partners are now able to tell exactly when, why and where Russian mercenaries man tankers from the shadow fleet. Three articles out today. In Danish. Read here.

Photos of newly arrived immigrants at Ellis Island. Augustus Sherman took the photos between 1902 and 1920 when he worked as the Chief Registry Clerk. Striking to me how the outfits all look good because they have a discernible silhouette (shape and drape).

Two photo. The first is of a Romanian piper; the second is of three Georgians who were employees of the "Buffalo Bill Wild West Show."
Two photos. The first is of a Romanian shepherd. The second is of an Algerian man.Two photos. The first is of a Ruthenian woman. The second is of a Guadeloupean woman (apparently actually en route to Montreal, Canada). Two photos. The first is of a Greek soldier. The second is of an Indian boy.

Deadlock over. The EU just cleared way for the €90-billion-loan for Ukraine and the 20th sanctions package. Russia’s war economy is under growing strain, while Ukraine is getting a major boost. We will provide Ukraine what it needs to hold its ground, until Putin understands his war leads nowhere.
