That's very sad. I only spoke to Juliet Gardiner once, when she was looking for this photo from my exhibition about the Liverpool Blitz for her book jacket. She generously said she was blown away by the exhibition. I was able to say how much I'd enjoyed an exhibition of hers at the Hayward Gallery.
The book tackled full on the place of the blitz in British national mythology, concluding – surely rightly – that while the image of the chirpy, ever-cheerful Cockney had been badly overdone, there was still ample evidence of real fortitude in adversity and even real community spirit.
