people are answering this with a bunch of serious shit like "treatments for HIV" and "no indoor smoking" and "ozone layer" and while I respect all that, I would just like to contribute: makeup shades are much better than even 20 years ago.
So this is basically one of the entry points to becoming a reactionary
My mom no longer cuts the crust of my sandwich due to woke decadence
Bay Area friends: would you consider opening your home to these two cuddly cats? A friend found them behind a gas station. Their sibling, a black cat, got adopted, but it appears no one likes orange cats. They are being kept in a bathroom for the time being and need a home.
A friend of mine found these three kittens behind a Bay Area gas station. They are tame, vaccinated, and incredibly affectionate. Unfortunately, she's unable to keep them and I'm trying to find them a home. They are at risk of going to a shelter. Bay Area people, are you open to adopting?
Fellow academics: I know a Haitian PhD student who due to TPS termination needs another institutional affiliation not in the USA. Do you or someone you know have an avenue for them? If so, DM me.
I found this, from Terence Tao, useful as a way of framing what mathematics is for, what AI is for, and how to evaluate knowledge: teorth.github.io/tao-web/slid...
teorth.github.io
So, bluesky, where is the discussion of the absolute insane things AI is doing in the realm of mathematics? It seems like we're nearly at the inflection point where the models are as good as human domain experts, and soon may well be better. Is that discourse only happening on twitter?
100%, it can't find emails I know are there when I search by their title
is it just me or did gmail search get a lot worse lately
Those who believe things like this are working hard at not understanding the finite options available to someone whose abuser has not been prosecuted, found guilty, etc. by the law. And how rarely those things happen to abusers, esp. high-status white male abusers.
Rep. Max Miller: "These are incredibly serious criminal accusations. If these accusations were true, I would be in jail — I would be. My former wife would not have been offering to cook me dinner and inviting me to playgrounds. Think about that."
"I was unavoidably moved before I saw it was the work of a group I don't like... and now let me use free association to tell you about 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 group I don't like"
It was inevitable that reactionary centrists would turn against harm reduction and call for a return to mass incarceration
If you have an academic in your life, please be gentle with them this weekend because they're probably freaking the fuck out.
Because the 1st is a Saturday, “How is it August already?!” will be observed today, Friday, July 31, 2026. Please panic accordingly.

This is Fenrir. He has not yet been successful in cuddling with the cat. But thinks if he goes slow enough she might not notice. 13/10 (IG: fenrirfanclub)
This is what "both sides" journalism has wrought. A complete inability for journalists to simply state clear and obvious facts that are supported by reams of research. This is not a debate. There are not two sides. Bike infrastructure and traffic calming make streets safer.
It's not just advocates who say this. Researchers, studies, and data say it. That's why advocates say it. Reporters can just say it, too!
No professional accomplishment has ever made me happier than this. theonion.com/translator-o...

ok I have a hot take: do NOT name your hedge fund anything that will be hilarious if it blows up. "long term capital management," "situational awareness," things of this nature
The overwhelming right wing sentiment is that COVID was an engineered bioweapon that was also harmless. Trump overreacted to it by shutting down the country, then engineered a drive to create a vaccine that was the real bioweapon that killed millions, and it's Joe Biden's fault.

“Your windows need scrubbing,” said Frog. “Your plants need watering.” “Tomorrow!” cried Toad. “I will do it all tomorrow!”
Studio execs are going to want to adapt more poems for the big screen now
Our tech team insist it has other causes; are the gods on Nolan’s side? It can’t be ruled out. The piece should be back up soon - thank you for your patience.
I saw the film last night and was nodding along with this review this morning. if you want to watch a broody one-note Odysseus, then sure, go see The Odyssey... 🧵
I wrote about the Nolan Odyssey for the LRB. I'll summarize some of my main points below, in case you don't feel like reading all that. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...
it felt very much like a spiritual successor to Troy (2004) to me
“None of the characters have convincing motivations. There are no sex scenes. And all the food looks horrible.” That Is about the harshest criticism of a Greek Epic I can imagine, Like millions of others I will see it anyway and still hope it is much better than Troy or Clash of the Titans
Got some cancel culture plums today and thought of you.
