in re Ray Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains" (which, in the original Martian Chronicles, occurs on today's date), I didn't realize the very first published version of the story, in Collier's magazine, was set in April 1985. (the current edition of Martian Chronicles now sets it in 2057).

I see a lot of you talking about "dopamine" and I wish you'd go back to talking about your astrological signs because at least then you wouldn't be confusing yourself about a real thing

Cat interests are more closely aligned with my own: they just want to eat, lay around and be cute, and murder anything smaller than them if the spirit moves them. Dogs keep asking you to go places and do things that are mostly interesting to the dog.

If you're a Warren Zevon fan you'll know that his favourite crime writer Ross McDonald visited him when he was in the dregs of addiction to give him a pep talk but this account of their meeting is a rivetting & haunting read that adds mystery to the anecdote: kevin6ca.substack.com/p/lew-archer...

LEW ARCHER AND THE EXCITABLE BOY

Earlier this year I read two excellent crime novels written by Newton Thornburg – To Die in California (1973) and Cutter and Bone (1976) – both of them set in Santa Barbara, California.
