The diarrhea lettuce company, Taylor Farms, uses slave labor contracted from the Arizona Dept. of Corrections. The backbreaking labor is often performed by imprisoned Mexican nationals who would be otherwise ineligble to work in the US. They are paid $1.50 an hour.

Ameaka Fatima Nkempu, a Johns Hopkins University researcher in public health, was detained by ICE while boarding a domestic flight. She says she is Cameroonian in a Medium article that she authored. As of Thursday morning, the ICE Online Detainee Locator did not list where she was being held.

On behalf of DoorDash, I write to express our support for H.R. 9720, the "D.C. Taxing Authority Review Act," which would require congressional approval before the District of Columbia can impose or increase a tax or fee. We believe this is a reasonable check against the hastily enacted local taxes and fees that fall hardest on small businesses and the residents who depend on them.
DoorDash's marketplace in the District is built overwhelmingly on small, independent merchants: Roughly 80% of DC merchants that were active on our platform as of December 2025 had 3 or fewer storefronts on the platform. These are the businesses least able to absorb new taxes and fees or the administrative burden of complying with them, from costly point-of-sale upgrades to added compliance overhead.
The District's recently passed delivery tax illustrates the risk: a tax on virtually every delivery, with proceeds designated for a myriad of projects and the District's general fund, passed without a single public hearing and, consequently, without input from the residents and small businesses it will most heavily impact. Based on our internal data, a tax like this would mean millions of dollars a year in added costs for D.C. residents and lost revenue for local merchants, and that burden grows quickly as the rate is increased, as authorized by the Budget Support Act. Research on comparable taxes bears this out: an economic analysis of Colorado's retail delivery fee found it raised takeout prices by nearly 1%; cut delivery orders by more than 400,000 a year; cost the restaurant sector over $12 million in revenue; and resulted in a loss of roughly 234 jobs across restaurant and delivery workers.

The call, during which the company asked for more proof and more time before being linked to the outbreak, illustrates how one of the country’s largest produce suppliers sought to limit its exposure to a public-relations nightmare, while grappling with a costly and complicated recall. Over the past several weeks, health officials have been scrambling to contain the outbreak of cyclospora, which can cause explosive diarrhea. Some current and former government officials have criticized the handling of the outbreak, both by the administration and Taylor Farms.

Federal health authorities were preparing late last week to link Taylor Farms to a multistate parasitic infection that has sickened thousands. The company wanted to see more evidence, according to people familiar with the matter.
The White House asked officials from the Food and Drug Administration, which has been investigating growing cases of cyclosporiasis, to join the call with Taylor Farms, which the government maintains is the source of the multistate outbreak. During the discussion, Taylor Farms raised concerns that the government had no positive laboratory tests linking its product to the outbreak and that it was overstating the company’s culpability, according to one of the people who was on the call.
Taylor Farms sought out the White House after company executives felt they hadn’t gotten enough clarity from the FDA on the evidence behind a potential recall and the scope of it, according to a person familiar with the situation.
Health and Human Services Department spokeswoman Emily Hilliard said the FDA presented Taylor Farms with substantial evidence connecting its products to the outbreak and engaged in extensive discussions with the company.
