never thought short form video would be able to capture a type of humor i can only describe as “the far side-esque” but this comes close.
The problem with using an LLM for some narrow use case where you think it’s actually appropriate is that you’re using it in the context of a UX system designed to make you expand your usage and change your views of what is “appropriate”
This is why you dont try to compromise or concede anything to these horrors

There's no correct way to defeat a souls boss because the games do not exist in a purely single player environment and encourage build variability. If FromSoftware doesn't want you to do something they tend to patch it out. Also, ultimately, who gives a shit what other people do in their home.
if I ever taught film criticism lesson one would be “you being smarter than the movie is not interesting to anyone”
there's a sudden inversion: now formal, strictly correct language is seen as cheap, and vernacular-laden (and home-learned during childhood) language is more authentic
One angle too is if Africans are used to train AI how to write, they will be accused of writing like AI. marcusolang.substack.com/p/im-kenyan-...

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
Apple charges people ~20% more than the Patreon list price and they keep the difference for themselves. They also hold the proceeds of iOS app sales for 75 days, making it impossible for creators to accurately predict earnings. They basically inserted themselves in order to rip *more* people off
Any of you using the ios version of Patreon to support me, switch to the browser version instead, cuz the apple fees have actually taken over 3000 usd from me in the course of a year
1. Newer writers, just don't fucking use "AI" for anything, ever 2. How odd that being an established writer with a firm "no 'AI'" stance and ample pre-"AI" IP will become a definite competitive advantage over "new, hot, and possibly copyright compromised" deadline.com/2026/07/ai-q...

That screeching sound you heard from international publishers and film rights buyers was an abrupt application of the brakes after a fevered pursuit of the unpublished debut novel.

Something I like about @elazic.bsky.social's careful read here is that it points out a fatal flaw with a lot of pieces of writing that pass for "reviews" (even from critics!) because they talk about a movie: saying "this is bad!" as if it's self-evident, rather than arguing for *why* it is bad.
Emily Wilson's piece on Christopher Nolan's THE ODYSSEY for the LRB went viral and was received very positively by many — but not by virtually every film critic I know. For @animusmagazine.bsky.social I wrote about why: animus-magazine.ghost.io/a-tale-as-ol...
Seeing every small business, be it a local restaurant, a moving company, whatever, all having AI logos and AI ads, really puts into perspective just how many artists are out of jobs now. All those little sustaining jobs where someone just needed a quick thing for $50 to $200 are just gone.
Early on in my career, this is what helped me save up money for my big move to California. $25 here. $50 there. Short blurbs for a local car seller. A VOICEMAIL for a small company. Either it bought my meals for the day or it went towards a 4-year “moving out” fund. Now the small jobs don’t exist.

I forgot to include a Daeg photo with this update
Took Daeg to the vet this morning after he'd been walking a bit funny; he's got some early arthritis now. he's on some pain meds now and they took blood for a test to see if anything else is up. hopefully it's just the arthritis! as far as old cat health issues go it's far from the worst one to have

Don’t make me write a newsletter about how Emily Wilson is allowed to be an expert, you guys
I am generally of the opinion that it's likely impossible to film a proper adaptation of the Odyssey. The best we can hope for is a flawed adaptation that is too rushed and lacks complexity, or an interpretation that is good and complex but cuts things away. To get both would require a 6 hour film.
