The birthday greeting that keeps on giving. Thanks for the reminder, Robert Fripp.
This essay by @jillmapes.bsky.social is really crushing and also beautifully written. I also have hope that this period of cultural decline isn't forever and people will remember the value of art and criticism that's not also advertising!
The dream is dead but we didn’t kill it
I can’t express my reaction any better than Ana’s words. I felt a similar deep DEEP disgust when I had the misfortune of seeing that repugnant AI Ghibli ICE post. Every scum-sucking fuck involved in this shit are making me pray for a Hell.
I cannot imagine a more disgusting appropriation of Spider-Man on both moral and aesthetic grounds. This is fascist AI-slop, the thirstiest cultural ambulance-chasing they could commit, and I hate them even more for it.
Self-portrait, 1999 @ Boston University, 35mm film. Still my own worst enemy, 27 years later.
Another last-minute jaunt to see the iconic titans of power-pop, CHEAP TRICK, play the dang Troubadour on a Wednesday night. Eternally grateful for the lifers.
Attended 2 shows that year which were life-altering: Bjork @ the Worcester Palladium '98 + Fugazi @ Lupo's in Rhode Island '99.

The brilliant voices behind RogerEbert.com asked me to expand my thread on Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY as a pointed assessment of America as “empire at dusk” into a full essay, which I was honored to do. Please read/share—and thanks to @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social @briantallerico.bsky.social for the invite!
"Nolan’s film is not a misbegotten attempt to modernize a classic—it is a deft and purposeful reflection of America in this moment, seen through the glass of mythological metaphor." Jeff Yang writes about THE ODYSSEY and the “people from the sea.”

mass layoffs at Pixar despite Toy Story 5 about to cross $1 billion at the box office. there is simply no amount of money that will make corporations happy enough to not upend people’s lives.

One of the quiet bright moments of lockdown was Sam Neill serenading us on the ukulele. This type of tenderness feels rare nowadays, how lucky we were. Thank you for everything. ❤️❤️❤️
A magical evening at the Bowl celebrating Wes Anderson’s films and music. My heart melted seeing Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman goofing around together on stage. Devastated by Jackson Browne singing “These Days”. And we are D-E-V-O.
