Wow, I wrote this one a long, long time ago – it's a rant about people going to see old movies so that they can watch them "ironically" and laugh

People who haven't seen this film need to *at least once*. Get a blanket, get snacks.
Kwaidan is on HBO Max. If you haven't seen it, don't be alarmed by the 3 hr running time. It earns every minute. Slow and quiet but hypnotic because the visual, sonic, and narrative negative space create tension. This seems paradoxical if you prioritize "fast" movies.
It was one of the hundreds of films I devoured while self educating working at a video store and running away with stacks of VHS tapes. Its beguiling aesthetic lives with me still. Gotta check it right now.
"It does not seem to have been written and directed so much as composed and then performed, in the manner of a classic jazz arrangement rendered live for a paying audience." www.rogerebert.com/mzs/30-minut...
30 Minutes on: "Elevator to the Gallows"
As much as can be said about Louis Malle's jazzy French noir in 30 minutes.

ATTN Polish film exhibitors---what are the chances?
It's one of the best horror films ever made. I hope the new restoration will be bought by one of these new re-release distributors that we got in Poland.
Man, when BMW says "that's too fascist for us"
just to emphasize what's happening here: BMW (a company that used slave labor under the Nazis) refused to provide an official vehicle to the ultra right-wing AfD party, which is now asking Elon Musk to provide a Tesla instead Tesla literally becoming the Nazi car brand
In November, Mainers will defeat Susan Collins, and we will take back our Senate seat from the billionaires and corporations who think they own it.
In case you missed it last night: we are seeing reports all over the country of immigration surges and state violence. If you need whistles for your community, we will send you 100-3000 3d printed for free, and we will love doing it. 3dwhistles.com

also this is the publisher lol
I put Kwaidan on a few years ago knowing basically nothing about it, and squinting at the TV in disbelief and saying "wait is that a set???" was an experience
It's also staggeringly beautiful. The whole thing is shot in Tohoscope (wide, narrow "epic" format) on huge sets with forced perspective backdrops & gelled, primary colored lights with complementary costumes, which all goes a long way towards helping us take the stories seriously but not literally.
I wholeheartedly endorse this recommendation. My favorite sequence is "The Woman of the Snow". Tatsuya Nakadai was one of the greatest of all Japanese film actors and he radiates not only sensitivity but also utter terror. This sequence *FEELS* ice cold.

i've identified the Dockers store where Michael Tracy bought and then subsequently returned these pants after wearing them. i will be pursuing criminal prosecution.

Not only is Kwaidan beautiful and haunting, but it's one of my favorite movies to think about it. It's unparalleled for ruminators. Gosh, it is awe-inspiring.

Recommended it to a buddy and he came back the next week raving about it. Hypnotic cinema.

“despite no explicit sexual content or even nudity, the show is rated nc-17 for flusteringly beautiful people immaculately dressed and lit and tension that makes you aware of your body again.”
wild to be living in a world with live-streamed state executions and legal daylight kidnappings, but every time you turn around some loser is saying, hey man, what if art were completely frictionless? what if we killed even the possibility of human connection??
the year is 2030 and i no longer consume anything that isn't personalized to me. every game, every book, every movie extends to the limits of my own imagination and no further. i haven't been surprised in five years. i cry softly, in bewilderment, if i see a word i don't know
maybe i'm old fashion but the coolest thing about video games is being taken to new worlds that i hadn't thought up and experiencing something exciting that the artists behind the game want to show me
