i love this building that just got approved by the toronto government to start development thats an 11 story residential apartment building with retail space on the ground floor, with a buddhist temple on the very top

hotter urbanist take: we should ban left turns *completely* in many places. of all traffic signal phases, left turns are the least productive and serve the least amount of people. they dont work well with median BRT/LRT & transit signal priority, and it limits crossing times for all pedestrians.

work took me to weston the other day. what was once a 2 hour bus slog one year ago is now under an hour. i can take line 5 to mount dennis & transfer to regional trains to go up to weston. however, if this were my regular commute, I'd choose a slower Line 5 + bus trip. here's the problem... 1/3

walking on finch avenue only to find this goofy parked on the sidewalk. before i could say anything, a red pickup pulled up beside him and the driver cussed him out on my behalf. my least expected ally. i love north york

a lot of US/canadian "better bus" redesigns involve more significant cuts in bus network coverage where ridership isn't offset by frequency boosts elsewhere service hours per capita for most bus systems are just too low to begin with, it's hard to see huge gains without properly funding the bus

Metro tried to make bus service better. Somehow, ridership and speeds are both down

some interesting takeaways here. streetcars have gotten slower generally, but the routes with dedicated rights of way fared a lot better than mixed traffic routes, so traffic congestion still is a very big contributor to slow speeds, besides the LF streetcar issues

a very pleasant car-lite spadina last weekend for toronto's chinatown festival. although it's not a full pedestrianization, turning a 4+ lane road into a 2 lane street really makes a noticeable difference. so much fewer cars and car-noise through this lovely part of town.

"hire another 1,000 police officers" is really just the toronto political candidates' version of "send another $20 billion to israel"

toronto does libraries right. our current mayor has managed to open every single library branch on all 7 days of the week. i don't believe any other major city has achieved the same in north america, not even nyc. we have the best library system in the world 🤭

i always tell myself that one reason to stay in toronto over vancouver is the diversity, and my sense of belonging within the diversity of toronto. however, recently discovering that metro vancouver has a latin american grocery chain (unlike toronto) is challenging this excuse

usually, if *all* a politician has to say about improving transit in your city is "make it free for everyone", it's a good sign that they don't really have a grasp on the state of transit in their city, or what riders want.

As Chair, I’ll build a long-term financial plan to make Metro fare-free. I’ve fought for a world-class transit system my entire career because public transit should create opportunity for everyone.

Politicians from Brad Bradford to Josh Matlow are talking about more policing but none of them are talking about the widespread corruption we’re seeing in the Toronto force (or across Canada). I think this is a big problem.

really excited for this next phase of biidaasige park. having a direct interface with the lake is nice, the sunsets will be so beautiful. sitting and staring out at big open water while in nature is one of my favourite things to do, something i miss dearly from the coasts.

yesterday while sitting in a park in kensington with friends, we saw 6+ cop cars race down the street. the "crime"? well, turns out someone called them because they thought a disabled black man had an invalid accessible parking permit, then lied about being pushed by said man.

They’re so close! Connecting the Orange Line to the REM would be such a big boost to the connectivity and redundancy of Montreal’s transit network.

This summer pedestrian street is being ripped up for utility work (sewer, water, electric). It’s going to be put back together as a permanent plaza design: car-free in the summer and car-light in the winter. (De Castelnau Street, Montreal)

I reserve very little, if any sympathy for drivers who complain about speed cameras. They’ve given us no choice! Drivers, however, have the choice to drive safely and legally, and they choose not to.

based on saxe's line of questioning you probably wouldn't think that she herself was moving this motion to speed up the 506. this was just a performative motion to get into a quibble with a candidate, all the while the TTC was already directed months ago to explore how to speed up ALL streetcars!

Today, transit riders spoke up at City Hall to share how Toronto's Community Crisis Service is making their commutes safer, shared their experiences with people in crises, & urged to expand TCCS across transit. Excited to see that Mayor Chow just passed a motion to expand TCCS across the subway! 👏❤️

I went to check out the 6-month Broadway closure that started today. Watch how this bus never has to stop! It's coordinated. They have done some truly incredible things with transit priority (for just a 6-month period!) and I want to see that implemented (permanently!) all over the region.
