if folks thought the men in R&V were "too progressive" for their time... ... i'm going to need everybody to hang onto their butts for D'Arcy's book. and it won't even be unrealistic! :D

Monthly reminder: Many people have a book in them, but it takes a special kind of freak to leave the Land of Laziness, cross the Plains of Procrastination and Insecurity Mountain, find the Blade of No One Made You Do This, and use it to cut your chest open and yank that book out.

THIS. People educated enough in the specific subject to pull the data together don’t need LLMs; people without the knowledge to weed data from the bullshit are at the mercy of the LLM. They’re obsequious Dunning-Kruger machines. Designed to flatter midwits and the technologically obsolete.

So, ok, a thing about telling yr audience "i use AI for my info gathering/research but then I look over it and fix any errors" is that you unfortunately told me youve outsourced your knowledge base on this subject to the machine, and therefore I have no reason to believe you CAN catch those errors

I've written a longer piece on the book that's been pulled due to "AI" use allegations, what that means particularly for newer authors, and what, if anything writers can do in the "AI" era to prove their work is their own: whatever.scalzi.com/2026/07/31/a...

Another Reason Not to Use “AI” For Your Writing

Back in February I did a long post about “AI” and why I wouldn’t use it for my own writing, and one of the reasons I gave was “the fact that ‘AI’-generated text …

comic by kate beaton: first panel is a mermaid/siren playing a harp on a rock. second panel a pirate comes along in a boat saying "I don't like the thing you are doing can you do a different thing that i like" and in the third panel the mermaid replies "i will fucking increase the fucking thing"

As we're all excited about retellings at the moment, I must recommend The Wolf and His King by @finnlongman.com, newly out in paperback: An excellent queer retelling of Bisclavret the werewolf, beautifully written, set in medieval Brittany following a man who longs to be a knight to the king... 💙📚🪐

A hand holds a copy of the book in a bookshop. The cover is gorgeous medieval reds, blues and golds, featuring a wolf standing atop a crown

phew. dropbox just about bricked my mac by holding hostage fileproviderd making it impossible to read or write any files *anywhere.* couldn't even open scriv to change my backup location. husband had to go into recovery mode and yoink dropbox's access to fileproviderd before ANYthing could be moved.

Circling right back around to my thread from the other day about how you can't really write consent until you have unpacked it so completely you know which parts of which tropes are the actual problem, and aren't just doing clumsy wholesale subversion that bumbles into other issues.
