it's incredible how the NYT is *sprinting* to do the "see we did cover trump fairly!!" shtick when it's all been tepid well-after-the-fact pieces (an article from april about the decision to go to war in iran isn't reporting, it's a history lesson) that don't imply malfeasance (like the alaska job)

NY Times assistant managing editor Patrick Healy gives an unacceptable answer when Marisa Kabas asks him why the NYT's Epstein story this week omitted a new rape accusation against Trump. Healy admits the accuser's past allegations on Trump were deemed credible enough for the Times to print them.
New — Editor Patrick Healy explains to me NYT’s omission of the new rape details shared by Beatrice Keul in their story about the new House Judiciary Dems report released this week:
Absolutely nuts. And from the outside it's difficult to understand why it's been allowed (or made) to be this way. In all my years voting in Dublin I've never waited even a single minute
Montgomery County, OH. Population 537,309. One place you can vote early.
This is both true and lacking any sort of empathy for what $300m of attack ads is doing to the lives of trans people.
MAGA has spent $300 million on ads attacking trans people. That money could be spent on 4 million bags of groceries. 71 million gallons of gas. 8.4 million months of insulin. Americans deserve leaders who take our struggles seriously. Tomorrow, we vote MAGA out.
I really cannot emphasis how disturbing a precedent Elon Musk's direct interference into an Irish criminal trial of a man accused of online abuse and harassment has set.
Elon Musk’s X turned an anti-immigrant activist's court case into a global free speech crusade
Our FactCheck editor details the internet trends seen by a thirtysomething-year-old man.

An extraordinary statement from X/Twitter's official Global Affairs account confirms that the company funded Kirk Loco's legal defence against a charge of online harassment over a tweet he sent in 2024. I don't think we've ever seen such an intervention by a social media platform before in Ireland
One of the great ironies of our wrecked landscapes is that, while the number one problem is often chronic overgrazing (farmed cattle, sheep, wild deer, goats...), there's also serious dysfunction due to the lack of ecological disturbance from wild megaherbivores. Great to see this being addressed.
The exciting frontier of rewilding: this is a 'tauros', a back bred analogue of the extinct aurochs, now living semi-wild in a number of European locations including Croatia...

Call to lower age for bowel cancer screening
Bowel Cancer Ireland has renewed its calls for better prevention and screenings following the death of Irish Olympian and European champion runner Ciara Mageean who had stage four bowel cancer.

Paul Golding, the leader of far-right Britain First showed up in Shrewsbury, England yesterday. He was given the welcome he deserved. He acted in the way you'd expect a fascist manbaby to act. Just shows you - the man does not make the suit after all... Things you love to see ✊
In Ireland we're told the only way timber can be produced is through deadzone plantations. Meanwhile, throughout the rest of Europe they seem well able to do it via far more natural forest ecosystems.
It's the norm in Italy. I've seen it. It's mixed woodland. Some trees are for felling and some got coppiced- chestnut. Some can't be touched- cork oak. It's cut by hand with chainsaw and dragged out by horse or mule to a track for loading up onto a truck. Cut every 20 years or so.
Rest in peace Ciara, and thank you for the joy you gave us all www.rte.ie/sport/athlet...

It was striking how unlucky Ciara Mageean was in her career - how her obvious talent always seemed to be blighted by an injury at the worst times - and yet how consistently upbeat, sunny, positive she was. She radiated good vibes, always, no matter how shite the hand she’d been dealt. An awful loss.
So if you're wondering how to counter the right wing hose of money and disinformation in your area, some handy tips on organising for elections from the Lula Army..
My video on lessons to take from Lula’s victory in Brazil has blown up on YouTube, and the comments are full of fantastic advice from Brazilians, like this. Take note.
Good sentences for these far-right terrorists in Ireland. I'm amazed the case was heard so quickly. Then again the evidence was overwhelming against them, and they pled guilty. Three more bigots locked up for Christmas, and for many Christmases to come! www.rte.ie/news/2026/10...

The sentences handed down today (10 & 8 yrs) to 3 individuals with no priors should, if nothing else, demonstrate that thanks to the IRA/The Troubles/Offenses Against The State Act, anyone trying to set up an Irish Proud Boys or other FR paramilitary group has immediately entered FAFO territory
As we enter the 2nd week of the Irish government's assault on NGO's independence, a campaign largely driven by manufactured far right social media outrage, two men who were radicalised by online content have been convicted of an attempted bombing of a Galway mosque.
Fairly conclusive. Another reminder that the likes of Facebook comments - where people generally moan and oppose changes such as pedestrianisation - is not real life.
Part of London’s Oxford Street is now traffic-free, with nearly one kilometre of the busy shopping area closed to drivers, cyclists and scooter users. While several popular streets in Ireland are already pedestrianised, do you think more should follow suit? jrnl.ie/7207146
The mistake that far right governments make is thinking that the demographic challenge can be solved by incentivising white women to have lots of babies. Orbán proved this only too well. Meaning the only solution is to ramp up immigration. Not surprisingly, the far right aren't keen on this topic.
Maybe someone can explain why RTE and Miriam O’Callaghan are pitching “Ireland’s Population Crash” when Ireland’s population growth is the second highest in the EU en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demogra...

Oh, good, because describing Ireland's demographic shift as "terrifying and fascinating" isn't going to feed into ethnonationalist propaganda. Well done RTÉ.
Want to know a city’s priorities? Watch its traffic lights. At this Delft intersection, pedestrians and cyclists enjoy a continuous green light. Drivers must ask permission to cross the foot and cycle path by triggering a sensor. Infrastructure shapes how we move. Traffic lights show who we value.
I am shocked - shocked! - that giving unwanted AI-driven search results by default, means Google has stopped receiving revenue for the results they are paid to show.
Wishing a very happy Schadenfreude to all who celebrate.

I resigned my Sinn Féin membership today. Fairly inactive last while anyway, I maintained membership anyway in quiet hope of better. However, the constant dogwhistles to the far right, instead of being a leading voice for marginalised communities as part of a better Ireland is too much. #Speirgorm
But I was told it was impossible for trans men to win in men's sports.
Folks. Please get behind the SocDems. I'm not saying that as a member, but as someone who wants the main opposition party in this country to represent decency. I want to end the state's racism and right-wing policies, not change the face of it.
This proposal is basically a copy/paste of current European right/far-right thinking, including "good character" (good luck defining that), language tests and self-sufficiency. It's dressed up in nice language, but effectively a rug-pull to severely restrict citizenship & create a two-tier system.
