Spare a thought for all the cat owners in this heatwave currently trying to coax their cats onto cooling mats and towards water bowls only for the cat to find the hottest sunniest spot in the house and lie there defiantly heating up to temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun

I get the impression that some people aren't clear what this means. This is the UK state deciding to intervene directly in the healthcare of individual children, depriving them of medicine that their doctors have prescribed for their personal health & wellbeing, in defiance of global best practice.

Update: Young people & families today received shocking & transphobic letters from NHS. These letters tell people that endocrine care (blockers / HRT) is being fully withdrawn in 7 weeks time (July 31st). Forced medical detransition. This country is a danger to trans children & young people.

Condemning riots isn't enough. We need policy action, including an immediate appraisal of X as a vehicle for coordinating far-right disorder. And we need political leadership, to challenge white nationalism as an idea, not to validate it daily and then complain when it turns violent.

I think every politician who proposes to ban anything on the internet for teens should be required to propose, as an alternate, a free and accessible and all weather space for teens to hang out in their own hometown

"If you cannot enforce your basic rights, such as lobbying your MP, going to court or standing for office, then you cannot fully participate in society" writes TransActual's Managing Director Helen Belcher for Byline Times. bylinetimes.com/2026/05/22/t...

'This EHRC Code Will Make the UK a Hostile Environment for Trans People'

Keir Starmer's Government promises trans people 'dignity and respect' but is overseeing a colossal failure to protect their rights and safety, argues Helen Belcher

We want to hear from you! We dream about doing lots of things, but time and energy are limited, so we need to prioritise - what would be the most useful or affirming for you? We'd also love to expand the mask bloc to be able to do more, so if you're interested in joining, get in touch!

Text in a white box on blue gradient background, with a doodle of masked people taking a selfie in the bottom right corner:
Help shape our work! Weโ€™re a small team of disabled people with limited capacity, and we want to make the greatest impact we can. So let us know: What aspect of what we do is most useful to you? Weโ€™ll always be distributing masks directly, but in addition we could aim to:
- stock more mask boxes in different parts of the city,
- share more frequent wastewater updates,
- share more science/educational content,
- run more in-person events,
- run more online events,
- do new things!
What would you like to see?
And if you want to help out with any of the above, please get in touch! No prior experience needed

A reminder that I'll be giving a workshop next week as part of the young Physical Chemists contributions to Bunsen-Tagung 2026 in Dresden! Come along and hear tips and tricks for shaping your manuscript for publication, as well as insights into the use of AI tools in publishing. #chemsky

Bridging the gap from surface science to heterogeneous catalysis Faraday Discussion
20 - 22 April 2026, London, United Kingdom

Early Bird registration deadline: 9 March 2026

The Discussion will bring together established and early-career scientists, postgraduate students and industrial researchers from the heterogenous catalysis and surface chemistry communities to design the new catalysts needed for societyโ€™s most pressing problems ranging from energy production, air quality and transportation to environmentally sustainable industry.

The Discussion will be organised into four themes:

๐Ÿ’  New experimental methods for observing catalysts in action
๐Ÿ’  Impact of artificial intelligence on heterogeneous catalysis
๐Ÿ’  Chemical mechanisms and system analysis in heterogeneous catalysis
๐Ÿ’  Rational design of dynamic and self-repairing active sites
