I genuinely don't know what to do with people who sincerely believe life was better 40 years ago. It's a sign of a person who just hasn't thought, and maybe can't think, about the past in any kind of rigorous way.

This is exactly right. This fact is the core of the 'Iranian overplay / mutual ruin' scenario: Iran can't actually do a lot of damage to the USA, but it can burn the GCC. So the scenario the matters is Trump decides 'not our bacon in the fire' and lets the region burn instead of taking the L.

Dead Carl@deadcarl.bsky.social · 4d agoI’m going to be a little mean here: “organizing experts” can’t appeal to their authority to dispute the idea that it is strategically unwise to get in an armed confrontation with the US government. If you’re going to defend violence as a means, you have to articulate a strategy.
Valuable lesson from successful protest movements, insurgent warfare, other asymmetric competitions: The bigger side wants a contest of force, because it has more material resources and physical capabilities. The smaller side can win if it makes the fight a contest of something else, such as ideas.

at a very basic level, 'this grocery is 30 percent cheaper than other groceries' incentives people to *go to that grocery from outside of the neighborhood.* When you're trying to alleviate a food desert you may not actually want people coming in and clearing the shelves early.

I figured it out! Wilson gives the exact same energy as reviewer #2 who rips into your paper in a cruel way but also makes you go "are you sure you even read this?" every sentence. like calling it "family friendly" or complaining that the movie doesn't draw attention to the atrocities of Odysseus.
