Even with headphones/earbuds, a person on a bike is far more aware of their surroundings than a driver in a soundproofed car. This is a distraction from the real issue of safe, mode separated infrastructure. Much like the helmet debate, it puts the burden on the rider instead of the infra design.
Derek Beres@derekberes.bsky.social · 2w agoJust saw a post by a cyclist who wears earbuds. Please don’t do this. Bone conduction headphones are a much safer choice. I come across too many cyclists or runners wearing in-ear buds that have no situational awareness. It’s just not worth the risk, for you or others.
Cyclists can hear more with earbuds in than drivers can hear with the windows up and the radio off. The earbuds are not going to kill them. Taking earbuds out won't stop a driver from rear-ending or sideswiping them.
If you really believed this and took cyclist safety seriously there are a range of other things you could focus on that would make biking safer. I'm so tired of this concern trolling while lawmakers ignore the regular and obvious dangers posed by drivers.
