“3/4ths of disabled people don’t drive. Stop using us as an excuse for car dependency.” — @nondriver.bsky.social in collaboration with @urbantruth.bsky.social. #UrbanTruth Worth repeating. #UrbanTruth
A LOT of us are non-drivers. And given the big public costs and consequences of driving, we should be making that easier, not harder. Are we putting our public money in the right places? Our SECOND messaging collaboration with @nondriver.bsky.social. Spread the word. #UrbanTruth
Most of us need to be more active and consume less unhealthy stuff. Building activity into everyday life is important and a big part of a complicated jigsaw. Govt hasn't been putting enough effort into that. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Why have obesity rates doubled since 1993?
Around seven million more adults are living with obesity than would have been if obesity rates had stayed the same as 1993.

“Climate scientists appalled by politicians' refusal to accept responsibility as heatwave hits France… They say that years of warnings issued from scientists about the consequences of global warming have not been taken seriously.” Lack of leadership, and far too much disinformation. #ClimateCrisis

A bicyclist died in a crash. Did he hit a tree? No, he was hit by someone driving a car. I wouldn’t call that a crash. Also, I don’t care that he wasn’t wearing a helmet. Bicycle helmets are not designed to protect you against impact with a car.

Every time I take my mom somewhere in our cargo trike she says the same thing (at some point in the ride): “Wow, you sure do see more on a bike than driving, don’t you?” Today she added “I think I have a glimpse into what my 80s will be like” (me riding her around even more in my bike). 🥰

Needs some bollards @worldbollardassoc.bsky.social
The planning application and marketing photographs (left): “The site will be a low car development with controlled parking provision. The internal road layout has been designed such that informal on-street parking will not be available.” Versus the reality (right):
Yet again, the Government is failing to treat the climate emergency with any sense of urgency at all. Climate-wrecking airport growth mainly helps people spend money abroad, when we could invest in green transport, connecting people to brilliant domestic destinations like, er, Brighton instead.

The bike and the railway changed the world once. Together, they could do it again. 😯 Did you know - a bike can increase a station's catchment area by up to 16 times? So why are only 2–4% of UK rail passengers combining the two? Find out more (from our latest magazine!) tinyurl.com/rail-cycle
How do you use it? It’s like the gordian knot of road layouts here!
Edinburgh is the city that on one hand officially advises visitors to "consider walking or cycling wherever possible" during the Fringe and on the other does naff all about its useless, painted, advisory, uphill cycle lanes in the centre with Military Tattoo-branded Range Rovers parked on them

I saw a woman cycling yesterday and she had TWO small child seats behind her what kind of super human is this woman and how do I become her friend although I assume she is busy with two small children and other things
The media focuses on reporting traffic conditions rather than reporting on the problems of having forced car dependency and the societal costs that are associated with that policy choice.
This used to be an old worn out strip mall with a massive surface parking lot. It is now being developed into spaces for people, commercial and residential space, all alongside active infrastructure. *See post 2 for what it used to look like. 🧵
If cities want to encourage people to walk, they need to provide plenty benches to have a wee seat. This one is in the garden outside Corstorphine library , where I walked along to pick up this brand new book which they reserved for me. You gotta love libraries.😍
We need to start legally holding auto manufacturers accountable for the death and destruction their product designs lead to on our streets.

"It's clear to me that climate change is the single greatest threat to human security that we face" - Carl Benfield, Army Veteran and Military Engineer speaking at the Extreme Heat Emergency press conference
We really need to ban cars until we figure out why this keeps happening.
How is that even possible

Remember when Edinburgh spent millions rebuilding Leith Street and came up with the most 1950s car-centric layout imaginable? Imagine building something that gets so congested you might need to divert bus routes, but has zero provision for active travel to take the load off 🙃

They say that climate breakdown will play out on the screens of people’s phones. Each time getting closer and closer to home. Until you are the one filming it
