If I wanted to protect the most prestigious and highly paid jobs for the social groups who usually hold them I'd probably design an education system that discouraged poorer children from studying the entry qualifications for these jobs as early as possible..

Higher English was Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (decent), Death of a Salesman (meh) and Porphyria’s Lover (which as a wee emo I loved but do not get much out of now, unlike eg My Chemical Romance’s back catalogue which continues to be a masterpiece)

US and UK friends, I'm curious: What books were part of your required reading for highschool literature class? Which of them do you remember loving, and which did you loathe?

(No, there should not be a by-election, no, it is not a democratic outrage to fill vacancies from the list, this is basic list PR voting system stuff that preserves proportionality, don't be tiresomely FPTP-brained.) (Peerages are, however, an actual democratic outrage)

Today we’re heading to Bologna, which is where I did a year abroad approx. 1753 years ago and haven’t been back to since, and feel quite weird about it.

This was a brilliant resource, not only offering language lessons but also a multilingual library of books for children and adults, an amazing thing for any parents trying to raise their children with a heritage language. Absolutely shameful this is happening to them.
