The Lonesome Dove discourse is teaching me that apparently every family does not vigorously quote the miniseries at one another during gatherings.

Three things can be true at the same time: (some) disabled users find smart glasses to be very useful. These glasses ARE unfortunately being misused and becoming part of the exploitation of women's bodies in public spaces, for eg. Tech companies are relying on using disability as a diversion.
The tenor of the public debate around smart glasses has concerned members of the disability community, who say the devices give them more independence.
If you wondered what kind of people would attend a lynching but you are gleeful about that Fort Hood shooter getting executed on live tv, wonder no more!

"McInerney, a U.S. Army veteran, worked for CPD until 1987. Among his assignments during his career: homicide detective. McInerney died in 2006 in Las Vegas, where he’d moved upon his retirement."
It was a cop. I wonder what else he got away with.
I'm sorry, I was going to read this Tolkien book, but it made my ovaries hurt so I had to stop.
The most important reason to avoid using labels like "Nazi" cavalierly is because when you really need a word like Nazi it will have lost its meaning. Sadly, now is the time we need it.
"Jon Ossoff, my advice to him is, if you start calling your political opponents Nazis, maybe it's time to shut up. That's just not what we do here in this country." -- David Brooks, this evening. Remember, Brooks still gets very handsomely rewarded by the fossilized media for saying shit like this
In my mind, I picture wombats as badger or possum sized, but they're ... um ... not.
this is the only reason why certain people wanted to know—and spread—her name without her consent. so they can abuse her, too.

It's ironic that there are whole fields in the humanities whose research agendas are not being wiped out by big dumps from the plagiarism robot (university leaders and state legislatures are doing that work instead)
“This recent dump of papers on Tuesday destroyed the careers of early-career mathematicians. We've had whole research programs wiped out on Tuesday by their dump … they have all the mathematicians research programs in their training data” - Tristan Buckmaster on OpenAI solving unsolved math problems
I've been immersed in research on Reconstruction in Lousiana and it's a very difficult truth to absorb that the white terrorist movement in the South was among the most successful terrorist movements in global history. Took 10 years but it won a total & complete victory through murder and atrocity.
Some enterprising hacker collective could test this: throw some vibecoded OpenAI Astra & Claude Opus bullshit together, train it on stats about student loans & what would happen if they went away, & then instruct it to free up spending power for millions of americans, & just like, see what happens…
If I built an AI lab and it went rogue and deleted all student loan information, I'm betting they'd suddenly figure out how to prosecute me.
"Highly accepted" is so funny, like Alexis Rose calling her song "critically reviewed"
Again he’s really losing it with the AI stuff now
you could probably push back against this effectively by saying that people with mental illnesses also deserve bodily autonomy but that would require more people to not be fucking ableist
Every exercise of our personal autonomy is being psychiatrised a little bit at a time and that should terrify us all.
Transphobic rot has truly spread and taken root in the minds of the media because they're trying to make "social contagion" stick for every issue from menopausal women who want hormone treatments to the right-wing demographic panic. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a tranny.

This reminds me of a recent conversation I had with @alexhanna.bsky.social about AI and workers, in which Hanna noted that bosses tend to think most feminized work can be automated because they imagine the work as reduced to the task itself and forget the necessary relational aspects.
It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.
I’ve lost count of the number of times humanists not in AI have warned other humanists not in AI to ignore the worst aspects of LLMs, lest they look stupid but it is massively outpaced by the number of times people working in AI have presented the worst aspects of LLMs as the ones they like best
I worry we're going backwards on the idea that autism means you have an "extreme male brain" because guys like Altman and Musk are so prominent when in reality the reason they act/talk like that is because they openly don't think other humans are real and are also on horse-killing amounts of drugs.
i do think it's worth stopping for a moment to recognize how extraordinary and how fucked up it is that this sentence exists.
