i am having trouble articulating this but a system that excuses gang rape as a youthful error on behalf of college men with ~ bright futures ~ does so because it is served by producing older men who are comfortable with, even enthusiastic about, torturing people at the system's behest

Fundamentally, this entire worldview is just mad that Africans have to exist in a place that should be undisturbed and unpopulated rainforest. Turn it into a nature preserve. That’s the contemptible premise

🎧 🪴 “The system is not what's holding us together; it's our humanity.” In this episode, we explore the diversity of grassroots aid efforts and challenge the formal humanitarian system to take a more humble, supportive approach to locally led action. 🔗 https://bit.ly/4hXRIHz

Today I learned that peer reviewed articles in academic journals aren‘t fact checked by an independent fact checker the way magazine articles are If this is the case, how can any journal article be considered accurate? it’s so easy to make small errors even on subjects you know up and down

- Experts in rich nations are highlighted, not those who are actually at the frontlines - After heroic efforts, the outbreak is controlled - Everyone promptly forgets the lessons learnt - We go into a phase of neglect and amnesia Until the next outbreak, and then we repeat the cycle, all over

Every single outbreak, we see the same pattern of response - Rich nations tell themselves that everything will be fine if they just ban travel and close their borders - Politicians make knee-jerk reactions to appease their base, ignoring everything scientists tell them
