VP of Policy at @thenyic.bsky.social at all three levels of government. Also the least useful kind of doctor

What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.

Matthew Yglesias continues to say that talking about ICE and excessive force in immigration enforcement helps Republicans. He is obviously wrong about this and refuses to acknowledge the data. Way past time for everyone to update their priors on this.

A new report on truancy in D.C. says that some Latino students are truant because the increased presence of ICE, other federal agents, and National Guard had "negative impact on their families." One kid said he was "genuinely afraid to step outside" after his dad was deported.

I have a NEW WEBSITE to provide media, advocates and policymakers a summary of what's known about the economic impacts of ICE activity in the second Trump administration! Please check it out, share widely, and lmk what else would be helpful here. theiceeffect.org

An ICE agent on the scene of a shooting in upper Manhattan on Thursday has repeatedly been accused in federal court of unlawful arrests and using force during arrests in New York and Minneapolis, a WIRED investigation finds.

ICE Agent at NYC Shooting Has History of Alleged Violence and Illegal Arrests

Brenden Cuni, an ICE supervisor, has been accused of excessive force and tackling a pregnant woman to the ground. Several of his arrests were later found to be unlawful in federal court.

Ok I did a quick derivative analysis of this YouGov poll. Lots of people know that ICE has killed people, but lots don’t know! It appears that: -71% of Abolish ICE supporters have heard of recent ICE killings -60% of Abolish opponents have heard -only 45% of “don’t knows” have heard of ICE killings

Today’s NYT Opinions Podc had Solis Anderson say the question to abolish ICE or reform it will be a upcoming fracture in Dem politics…….lol Maybe the DNC saw the poll where Abolish ICE was +8 among citizens and +65 among Dems. ICE is going the way of “military aid to Israel” lol

This is appalling. Apparently some of the people ICE is arresting at airports have not violated ANY law; their period of lawful status has been extended, yet ICE appears to have old data and is arresting people based on stale information.

Kate Angustia, supervisory policy and practice counsel at the American Immigration Lawyers Association, a trade group, said it’s a “misconception” that the people being arrested at airports let their visas expire and therefore forfeited their legal status.

“Many of these folks are in a lawful period of authorized stay,” Augusta said. “This means that longstanding policy and practice has been, for decades, to allow these people to remain here as their legal processes continue to be processed by the government.”

NEW FROM ME: The Great Delegalization. There are now (almost certainly far more than) 1M immigrants who were protected from deportation on Jan 20, 2025, and no longer are. It’s the result of a problem that’s been building for 30 years—& now only Congress can fix. www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...

These Immigrants Lived in the U.S. Legally. Now Trump Is Changing Their Status.

More than a million immigrants are seeing protections that granted them safe lives in the U.S. suddenly swept away.

This paper shows that immigration enforcement can _increase_ crime. Undocumented immigrants already have the lowest crime rate, but tough-on-immigration policy makes immigrants less likely to report crime. So immigration enforcement worsens the problem it was ostensibly meant to solve

Community Engagement and Public Safety: Evidence from
Crime Enforcement Targeting Immigrantst
By FELIPE GONÇALVES, ELISA JÁCOME, AND EMILY WEISBURST*
We study the role of victim reporting in the production of public safety.
We examine the Secure Communities program, a crime-reduction policy that involved police in detecting unauthorized immigrants and increased deportation fears in immigrant communities. We find that the policy reduced the likelihood that Hispanic victims report crimes to police and increased offending against Hispanics. The number of reported crimes is unchanged, masking these opposing effects. We show that reduced reporting drives the offending increase and provide the first elasticity of offending to victim reporting in the liter-ature, calculating that a 10 percent decline in reporting increases offending by 7.9 percent. (JEL J15, K37, K42)

We are a city of immigrants, and our long tradition of offering safe haven to all, as well as our laws, reflect that. To every immigrant New Yorker living in fear today: you belong here. And anyone who wants to come for you will have to come through your neighbors and fellow New Yorkers first.

Powerful visualization of horrifying conditions of confinement in ICE's holding room cells, based on testimony of brave detainees who came forward to sue ICE and challenge abuses at 26 Federal Plaza. Great reporting by @douglasmac.bsky.social as usual! wapo.st/3R6bdmr

ICE officials warned of dangerous crowding. See how they kept packing people in.

Dozens were held for days in small rooms last year with no beds, showers or full-time medical staff, records analyzed by The Post show.
