Three years ago, @tressiemcphd.bsky.social published an NYT op-ed on why the South matters to America's democracy and how its ongoing dismissal misses the mark entirely. Three years later, she has been proven right 10 times over and then some. #midterms
Opinion | Why I Keep My Eyes — and My Mind — on the South (Gift Article)
To understand where the country is headed, look to the South.

Black voters in the South turned out at around 96% of presidential levels this election, compared to 71% for other groups. If turnout among Black voters was the same as for other voters, my estimate is that Cyndi Hyde-Smith would have won Mississippi by 4 points.
I compiled this information for a webinar last month, and I thought it might be of interest to my readers here on Substack, so here you go! This slide is my "greatest hits" list of changes at NIH since January 20, 2025. It is by no means a complete list. formernih.substack.com/p/changes-to...

Senseless, tragic death. The charlatans who spread distrust of vaccination through callousness and greed bear responsibility for this.
An infant in Wisconsin has died of measles, the state health department says — the third measles-related death reported in the U.S. this week.
I just think that, if I was running an AI company, the first suicide would have me shutting the whole fucking thing down. And yet I've lost track of how many there have been at this point. Likely we don't actually know.
This is so incredibly grim and was completely preventable.
Celebrating small wins! A short story about harm reduction involving a teen who overdosed (OD reversed!) and community relationship building over many many years. (1/3)
Some Dems did run anti-trans campaigns, and the results show that NONE OF THEM HAD TO. So one of my takeaways is that if you are Dem and still running on bigotry, it's not because you are being "pragamatic" it's because you are being a bigot. And you don't have a pollster to cover your ass anymore.
They murdered bombing survivors. They imprisoned children. They held one of our neighbors on the ground and shot him to death. They invaded our cities. My overzealousness at wanting this addressed is not the problem.
I want 1000 articles focused on people in the Rio Grande, the trans people elected to office, the Black people in the South who have been organizing for the past 2 decades, the young people in NYC who decided to overthrow the corrupt Cuomo etc al, the young people across the world fighting back, etc
I want them to nationalize his companies. That is consequences for me.
Democrats are likely to launch investigations into Musk's influence, including his leadership of DOGE and government contracts n.pr/4zkIQRz
Two studies—one by Brooke Nichols (at BU) & the other by Charles Kenny & Justin Sandefur (at CGD)—both point to roughly the same mass death outcome: Musk’s killing of USAID (which he called “feeding USAID into the woodchipper”) led to about 700,000 deaths within one year (of whom 500,000 were kids)
That’s the thing. DOGE didn’t dot any i’s or cross any t’s. They ransacked the govt illegally, destroyed careers, got many people killed, then burned all the documents on the way out the door. Demanding criminal investigations — including of libertarian-god-king Elon — is the moderate position.
Oh my sweet giddy aunt these children are going to have textbooks with facts instead of Lost Cause Praeger U bullshit thank you thank you thank you
THIS JUST IN: Democrats have FLIPPED the Texas State Board of Education! This is a monumental win for Texas students, families, and the entire education community in our great state. Congratulations to our incredible candidates!
The election was about many things, but it was also about affirming evidence-based science. People voted against restrictions on abortion and gender-affirming care. They voted for pediatricians and public health officials, for people who've protected vaccines and Medicaid.
Really, really important for Democrats to understand that if we allow "enforcing the rule of law" to be redefined as "getting even" we are cooked.
"The American people don't want us to get even; they want us to get things done on their behalf." House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who is now poised to become the next House Speaker, says that Democrats will focus on affordability concerns and not retribution after their midterm wins.
There are now enough states with Dem trifectas to pass the interstate compact on the national popular vote. The end of the Electoral college may be upon us.
three things that should be extremely clear after last night - people hate the tech overlords and you need to go after them - theres no reason to be scared of their money - there is no downside in bringing them to heel
Wisconsin in the past decade is a story of triumph over competitive authoritarianism no less spectacular than what happened in Hungary
MAJOR PROJECTION: Wisconsin Democrats have flipped AD-30 and AD-85. With their flips of AD-30, AD-51, AD-61, AD-85 and AD-88... Democrats have flipped enough state assembly seats to secure a trifecta in Wisconsin
Shout out to the National Academy of Sciences for spending the past two years finding excuses to capitulate to Trump and Vought’s bullshit, instead of taking a stand for what you knew damn well was right.
Years of hard, tireless, painstaking work by people who believed that we could turn Wisconsin into a democracy again. bsky.app/profile/mcop...
Having lived in Wisconsin for 13 years, this is amazing. And a crucial moment was winning the Supreme Court to break one of the worst gerrymanders in the country. (perrenial hat tip to @benwikler.bsky.social)
A special "Fuck you" to every so-called progressive who wanted to throw trans people out of the train. Trans rights are human rights.
Missouri Prop 3 that would ban gender affirming care in Missouri has FAILED.
HOLY SHIT: North Carolina Democrats just overcame gerrymandering and flipped the state House, ending 16 years of Republican legislative dominance. This has enormous implications for gerrymandering and voting rights
VICTORY: The North Carolina House has flipped for the first time in 16 years! Congratulations to the lawmakers in this new majority who will head to Raleigh to continue their work to improve the lives of all North Carolinians!
Annie Andrews: “I don’t think there’s ever been a more important time to elect scientists and medical doctors to all levels of our government.” www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
A pediatrician is running for Senate. Can doctors change the political debate over health and science?
After Lindsey Graham’s death, Democrat Annie Andrews finds herself in a closely watched race as she seeks to flip his Republican seat

While people are understandably focused on the national level, the wave is going to reshape state legislatures, Governor's offices, AGs etc. Not much legislation from DC in the next 2 years, but the action will be at the state level.
Fuck you, bigots. Fuck you right in the fucking ear
