Cloud giants wield influence in so many ways that we don’t even consider — including shaping and capturing research. This week @ceciliarikap.bsky.social joins @parismarx.com to discuss how major tech companies shape society and why we need to push back. Full ep: techwontsave.us/episode/339_...

Imagine the conversation we could have about this travesty if NCTE didn’t require Cs officers and executive committee members to sign confidentiality agreements. Folks should also ask NCTE about how and whether their lucrative grant/partnership with Google was part of what Cs “culture” threatened.

Regional networks and support are SO important, but following CCCC‘s dechartering, I believe we need national and international organizing to maintain our discipline and combat the intensifying authoritarianism that brought down our org in the first place.

I wish the reporter had expiunded on the differences between the organizations’ AI stances. NCTE, for example, has partnered with Google, while CCCC has started recognizing a range of student and teacher responses, including refusal.

"On July 15, the CCCC executive committee presented cuts to NCTE that closed the budget gap, but 'that was not acceptable,' the source said." Anyone not bound by an NDA able able to explain this?

The CCCC Exec Committee released a brief statement on the NCTE’s intention to dissolve CCCC. "CCCC is the professional home for thousands of scholars, teachers, and researchers...with a decades-long record of shaping how writing is taught, studied, and understood."

It often feels like institutions of higher ed are slow to make progressive change but very quick to go forward with bad & harmful changes. Anyway, here’s the sticker I was buying at an art fair when the news dropped that NCTE voted to de-charter CCCC

Black and white sticker with black text that reads “May we all continue a practice of refusal as a necessary form of resistance survival and refuge”

I will never choose to affiliate with @ncte.org, given the absolutely disgraceful way they have chosen to dissolve CCCC, a 70+ year organization central to the discipline of writing and literacy studies. I am so disappointed in the NCTE leadership. May they come to view their actions with horror.

NCTE has just summarily killed a 77-year-old organization that has shaped how writing is understood, taught, and learned, in higher education in particular. No member involvement. No transparency. No process to speak of. With friends and fellow educators like these, I guess who needs enemies.

Here it is, folks. @ncte.org Executive Committee votes to "de-charter its special topics conference CCCC," i.e., to shitcan the Cs. mailchi.mp/ncte/ncte-up...

I find it very embarrassing for our field that we've been having to repeat this about "AI" and writing instruction since I was one-year old (from an article by Fred Kemp in a 1987 issue of Writing Center Journal)

You may marvel, and many do, that computers can discover and describe in minute detail these characteristics of a student's paper, but I have a different reaction. Taking my cue from Artificial Intelligence research, Iook for truths about human discourse from what the computer can't do. The fact that a computer can perform the above analyses in ready fashion while being completely locked out of the content of a paper suggests that computer editing, while no doubt useful commercially and in discourse analysis, is not very useful pedagogically. Style-checkers promote a band-aid approach to writing instruction and direct time and attention away from the larger issue: the quality of the student's ideas and the relationship between those ideas and the form of expression she employs."

Unregulated AI deployment risks significant job losses, increasing poverty while boosting corporate profits. It may also enable criminal activity through security breaches and scams, as its unchecked advancement overlooks serious societal consequences.

AI cannot destroy higher education without help from professors. Sadly, many are choosing to help. Peer review, GTAs and GRAs, tenure assessments, feedback to students . . . these are all systems we need to protect, not delegate to the robot prediction machines.

Oh my god I almost fell out of my chair when a senior colleague told me he was using ChatGPT to evaluate a tenure file as an external reviewer because he wanted to help the candidate but didn’t have the time to read all the work.
