1. CRISPR came from basic research on bacteria. 2. Optogenetics started with a discovery in algae. 3. The GFP protein comes from jellyfish. The biggest breakthroughs all trace to scientists following their curiosity, and this is one huge reason why we must keep funding basic research!

New paper out in Neuro-Oncology Pediatrics. Thanks to everyone who worked on this with me.
@elinnjohansson.bsky.social's latest paper is now online in Neuro-Oncology Pediatrics: ACVR1 mutations are shared by DMG and the bone disorder FOP, where hypoxia drives disease. Turns out hypoxia signaling is up in ACVR1-mutant pediatric gliomas too. Open access here: doi.org/10.1093/neup...
🧬 Preprint! 🧵 Our goal is to genetically manipulate every embryonic germ layer to enable high throughput in vivo studies. We previously showed mouse ectoderm can be targeted by amniotic injection, enabling cell-specific manipulation, lineage tracing, and knockouts. But how to reach mesoderm?

Astrocytes do so much more than any of us thought - they even communicate among specific brain regions across hemispheres! The journey to this paper spanned nearly a decade, but I'm most excited to see what everyone else does with the tools we've built. There's so much for all of us to explore!
Astrocytes connect specific brain regions through plastic networks - Nature
