Freelance Game Translator 🎮 EN to DE. Lore hoarder and wordsmith sind 2016. You can find some of the cool stuff I worked on on www.charontranslations.com

This was a fascinating exercise: find out what went wrong with creativity in the games industry. The conclusion: there are too many cowards controlling too many critical levers, and until we figure out how to put people -taste, creativity, and craft- back at the top, we're going to be stuck.

The games industry is stifled by a culture of fear, concludes a workgroup hosted by Rami Ismail. https://bit.ly/4vPbIzv

Imagine being a designer, opening Photoshop, trying to add a layer or rasterize a picture, and getting hit with a warning: "You can't do that without the approval of your superior". This is what some CAT tool providers are doing. (Original screenshot by Andy Tang)

Localisation is far more difficult than the public realises. It requires art, design, engineering, translation, and production logistics have to all align in the right way to ship something good. It is not something you can slap in at the end.

game devs: what are the myths that a lot of players of games think are true about making games that are completely untrue? If you could snap your fingers and they suddenly all knew the truth about it what would it be?

Since March, the Steamworks API can provide wishlist breakdowns per language. I'd love to compare data from devs that decided to translate their Steam page and those that decided to use EN only. If anyone wants to share some data on that, please let me know. ☺️

That's what we call a smart way to be cost-effective: instead of getting fooled by the AI hype & thereby opting for less quality, cut out the (often various!) middlemen.💡 There's lots of great AV translators around for all kind of language pairs. They're not hard to find! Ask the AV associations!

AI can't translate. It can give you the gist of a text, but not an accurate, well-written translation. Meanwhile, translators are being replaced by AI, and many are leaving the business. Language courses are closing down. So basically a whole profession and its skills are being wiped out.

What the fuck is it good for? Im asking sincerely. Medical people say its shit for diagnosing, its utter garbage for creative fields, it cannot teach and hallucinates false answers, programmers have to fix its code half the time, businesses find it doesn't help productivity and it causes psychosis.

Together with my Italian colleague Elena Zaffaroni from LocalizeIt, I got to give a talk to game dev students from the THUAS Gamelab in Zoetermeer about localisation yesterday. These talks always make me happy, because the students always have tons of questions. gamelab.tech/waarom-game-...

One thing AI LLMs are very good at: convincing their victims that mediocrity is greatness, and that the ability to generate high volumes of mediocre content is a substitute for skill, talent, or work. This is the distinct impression I get every time I look at LinkedIn.
