Retired wetland/stream/404 in NM. Part-time consulting. Geologist. Daughter is a badass Marine. The Guy (who eats dinner across the table from me) did the same thing I did before he retired. I photograph wildflowers and make jewelry.

Between my sister barfing up hot dogs on my dad’s feet and me spitting canned peas in the toilet, I can say 60s meals sucked ass and I am so glad I eat so so much better now. (We also moved to Korea in 69 and I can’t tell you how lovely it was to have Asian food all of a sudden in our dinners)

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

I was a little surprised by how much this bothered me, tbh. Not because I thought it was intentional or even human carelessness- it's a reminder that these algorithms work against difference, they work against outliers, they work against marginalia (literal & figurative). And that's what I write for

my pinned tweet for years was "I write for the people whose names get underlined in red by microsoft word" and...this is why. (no shade to the lovely people at the MIT Press reader, who changed it immediately as soon as I pointed it out)

a screenshot from my essay. You can see the byline: "By: Malka Older" and some truncated text as well as the corner of an image of the cover of the book and the image caption: "Martha Older’s essay appeared in an annotated version of Jules Verne’s “From Earth to the Moon.” "Martha" is underlined three times in orange by me

BREAKING: The New Mexico Department of Justice has sued Acting AG Todd Blanche and the DOJ, requesting the court for access to unredacted Epstein-related investigative files that the DOJ has been withholding.

No. This is false. The crew ignored two NOTAMs and tried to visual on a moonless night. GPS jamming (which occurs regularly and was one of the NOTAMs) did not actively corkscrew them into the mountain. I’ve reposted other, more accurate explanations of this incident.

Screenshot of someone claiming the military actively killed a medical flight crew.

one of the other other things about this is the jamming was occurring after midnight local.....deliberately, because that is the least disruption to the NAS (should be little to no GA and airliners won't be flying in to airports in the impacted area/stuff like x-country redeyes can fly around)

Mike Black@mikeblack114.bsky.social · 18h ago

also it wasn't bad weather, it was night time, that's it Which is deliberate because the disruption to the National Airspace System is much less impactful at night than daytime Like the argument here is DoD should instead be jamming at high noon lol

Not sure if everyone appreciates the difference. Rooftop solar hardwires into your main panel via a dedicated breaker, so it requires a permit, an installer, an electrician, and a utility agreement. Balcony solar just plugs into a wall outlet, sharing an existing circuit with no permits or rewiring.

Case in point- keeping electricity on in ppls houses during heat/drought emergencies on a hotter planet requires changes in supply. Solar energy is the key, along with adapting nuclear plants.

Holy crap. Watching NHK news and just saw radar of the typhoon heading towards Oki that my girl was telling me about last night. She said it’ll be a direct hit. Hope it is weak.

This is Loki, our Maine Coon and the cat of our hearts, and he went missing today. We have no idea how he got out, but he’s an elder, indoor cat, the whole region’s in an intense heat wave, and we’re really scared. I doubt I have any followers here in Martinez, CA, but if so, help? It’s SO hot
