I continue to think the optimal compromise on policymaking around social media is that we should ban it for kids but also ban it for adults.
Musk invested in Twitter with the thesis that there is almost nothing he could do to destroy it's network effect, and that thesis seems basically validated. I remain convinced he could put a portrait of Hitler at the top of the For You feed and people wouldn't stop using it.
Not only could they have not done it but the US would instead be enjoying an era-defining boom the likes of which it's not seen since electrification in the 1920s.

It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.

And the entire time, they looked longingly at the dirtbag leftist media sphere, which they were banned from for the aforementioned core audience. In 2020, they tried to bridge the gap.
I don't want to see these guys so much as knock doors for any future campaign.

Platner's lies were so powerful because they were so obvious. we knew he wasn't really a working class hero, that he wasn't a doofus who got a Nazi tattoo and kept it for decades, that he wasn't just a kind of befuddled guy to date. he was a man who could get away with anything. a man with power.
just like with Trump, the obviousness and openness of the lie was a major part of Platner's image. for the beltway elites, he was a clear example of what you can get away with, that there really is a sucker born every minute. the more obvious the lie, the more momentum he was said to have!
this is what happens when you want politicians who mimic Trump's postures - you get politicians who mimic Trump's behaviors these are literally the tools of our enemies.
if you got taken in by Platner: 1) center the experiences of those he hurt 2) admit you were wrong 3) spend the next few days figuring out how to not get taken in by a guy doing *exactly* the same thing next time, because there will be guys doing *exactly* the same thing for the rest of your life
there is a cohort of men who resent the responsibilities and obligations of adulthood — of the fact that you owe things to other people. it is a fundamentally childish impulse that they have reconfigured as the height of masculinity, and i think it informs the parasocial attraction to platner.

I think the Platner thing hit me so hard bc it was one of the most protracted, widespread acts of misogynist gaslighting from my own side that I've seen. We were presented with an obvious violent scumbag who was constantly lying (badly, might I add) and told we were crazy for not loving him
the ongoing defense of Platner tells me that plenty of men on the left hate women more than they love their supposed principles
TIL that Platner's time as a bartender wasn't at some local bar, it was at a bar in Capitol Hill where big money national party consultants and other political operatives drink and do drugs together. That actually explains a LOT.
This was one of the more heinous things about Platner when it was written and it’s aged like raw milk in the New York City Sun.
