The Trump admin is back with version 2.0 of its higher ed compact. The reason is simple: The first one failed. Compact 2.0 lacks egregious elements of its predecessor. That’s a victory & affirms that the answer to authoritarianism is organized resistance—not compliance. www.aaup.org/news/new-com...

New Compact Shows Resistance Works, but Fight for Higher Ed Isn’t Over

The Trump administration is back with a second version of its higher education compact. As with its predecessor, the best path forward is for higher education workers to organize and demand that their...

Many say this leaves no path to redemption; I will note that paths to redemption exist, but they are for the offender to walk, not for others to deem it walked on their behalf. And a Nazi isn't walking a path of redemption if they remain in the Nazi party. Nothing stopping them. Path open.

Abdul El-Sayed has won, NBC News says. And there are other wins for the left in Michigan: —William Lawrence wins his U.S. House primary. —A DSA-backed candidate is leading a Democratic incumbent for state House. —Abbas Alawieh, co-founder of Uncommitted, leads for state Senate.

I cannot emphasize how much of a non-issue this is. I use the women's. Doctors ask when my last period was. Airport security looks back up at me when I hand them my passport. I have navigated life smoothly as a woman for years, and I am only endangered by the ideological fixations on denying that.

Anyway i will just continue using the women’s toilet cause I am a woman and over my dead body will you deny who i am

Something I've noticed happening more and more lately are trade reviews that barely review the book. Publisher's Weekly and Kirkus will have a review that's 90% a description of the plot and characters, then 1 sentence at the end to aid librarians in deciding if it's worth adding to a collection.

and look - I’ll take a boy who has mildly annoying takes on modernist novels, noise bands, and Leonard Cohen over a boy who cares for no one and nothing but meme stocks and anabolic steroids ANY day

can’t believe our current all-ages literacy crisis is making me a little nostalgic for the pretentious “we publish experimental poetry chapbooks and have strong opinions on Melville and the 1800s fur trade” Literature Boys of my college years in the late 2000s/early 2010s.

yes, the Tiresome Literature Boy could be exhausting at parties when he tried book mogging you while looking down his nose at you over his bottle of Vermont craft beer but you could feel reasonably confident he wasn’t going to unhinge his jaw and attempt to devour you in the name of proteinmaxxing

It's made explicitly so that it can be tracked, policed, and censored. No more, no less. Especially because you can already know this about anything your kid is watching. You can google it. It's easy to figure out. I'm serious, watch She-Ra for about six seconds, you'll know what's in it.

But I can't stress enough, this is NOT in good faith. "Parents should know if their children are being taught gender ideology, and you can make sure that they do. The government has a profound interest in protecting children from adult content."

I've never watched Hot Ones because I don't give enough of a fuck about what celebrities think about basically anything, but it *would* be interesting if there were a version where they have on like, academics and researchers and grad students and such.

The Shout Factory YouTube actually does a great thing with this where they have episodes of absolutely heinous stuff like Bonanza or ALF in Italian constantly running live so you get that feeling of turning it on and being like what the fuck am I watching?

to take an actual crack at this: requiring effort to access entertainment (set schedules, physical media, rare reruns, limited home access), often meant you proved yourself a fan by dint of the consumption itself, and I think that’s been replaced by toxic fandom to prove your bona fides.

It’s hard to explain but tv was better when you couldn’t watch the show you wanted whenever you wanted to watch it and most of the shows were worse and the TVs were worse and the entire experience was worse, that’s when it was better
