I found out that data center nobody wants is actually being built on imminent domained bits of a friend of mine's old family farm. They sold the farm long ago, but he still thinks his dad is spinning in his grave.

have to point out that *yes* trust in the CDC is at an all time low, but no its not because of the pandemic -- polling by KFF took a dramatic drop within the 1.5 years of the Trump admin for Dems and Independents. this doesnt mean trust overall didnt drop but the lows aren't because of COVID.

Hear me out: this is even wilder than it looks. Out in the ag world, Taylor Farms was THE instigator for a lot of the big food safety moves for lettuce over the last 20 years. That's a legacy that just should NOT have ended up like this.

THIS You know that "Trump cancelled a program that tracked Cyclospora" thing? That was FoodNet, which is a *long-term library of disease data.* It's not a track-the-outbreaks-in-real-time tool! FoodNet could be fully functional on tracking Cyclospora, & it still wouldn't help with this outbreak!
Dr. Lucky Tran@luckytran.com · 2w agoImportant nuance: While Trump CDC and FDA cuts have hampered tracking longer-term disease trends, real-time monitoring of cyclospora was not eliminated and current investigation (with the help of state reporting) is proceeding and making progress.

It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.
