IMPERFECT SCIENCE It feels like war is all that mech pilot Maris Keigh has ever known. One of the only constants she can cling to in a life defined violence and chaos are her post-sortie check-ups — and the technician who conducts them… also available at: rats.red/i-s windowsloth.itch.io/i-s 1/15

IMPERFECT SCIENCE, Page 1:

An overhead shot of a crater with a building perched on its edge. There is some smoking wreckage on the opposite side of the crater and several figures stand in the center. The following panel is a slightly zoomed-in version of the same scene except viewed through a thermal camera or something similar: the figures in the crater are lit up white against the dark ground.

A wide shot establishes them as a group of lean, dark colored mechs. Several of them seem to be assembling some sort of canon, another is crouched, and another stands and looks into the distance.

“All units, in position. We have visual on the research outpost.”

“Sir!” One of the mechs interjects, addressing the one standing above them, “Got something on the sensors, it’s approaching fast!”

A two-shot of the two mechs, as the leader asks, “Another patrol?”

“Negative, just one signature–”IMPERFECT SCIENCE, Page 2:

“It’s her!!”

A low angle shot of another mech, much bulkier, standing on the edge of the crater with the sun at her back. It’s the HIPPOLITA, the one mech they didn’t want to see today.

“Heyy, I knew there would be more of you skulking around!” She says, and we see her launch herself forward down the rim of the crater as the leader of the party of smaller mechs, who shouts, “Weapons ready on my mark!!!” before Hippolita slams into it, grabbing her directly by the head and knocking it clean off its feat.

“Sorry to interrupt your fun!”
IMPERFECT SCIENCE, Page 3:

We see both pilots glaring at each other from two panels on opposite sides of the page. On the left, the pilot of the larger mech wears a visor over her eyes and seems to be suspended in some kind of liquid, whereas the pilot on the right has some kind of gas mask or muzzle over the lower half of its face and is seated in a more traditional cockpit. Between them, the larger mech stands tall, holding the leader of the opposing mechs by its head almost like how you might scruff a kitten.

“That outpost was evacuated hours ago, you assholes are wasting your time.” Says the pilot of the Hippolita.

“Who says we’re here for the outpost?” The other pilot responds, and there is a small insert panel where we see the two of them in thermal vision, a reticle directly over them.

The bottom half of the page just shows the two mechs barely visible as an explosion engulfs both of them.

“Ah, fuck.”

Every freelance journalist has stories like this about publishers, doesn't matter where in the world you are. My worst one was a South African publisher moving the goal posts ~four times. Each time I'd rewrite to spec and then more nonsense. The story never ran, I was never paid, I was also ghosted.

Well, it’s invoicing day, and since they’re really apparently not going to pay me for something I wrote for them two months ago, I guess today is the day to post about how @vulture.com fucks over its film freelancers. Long (sorry) thread, with receipts:

A recent discovery I've made is that my brain works faster on paper than digitally. I think it's because working digitally locks me into editing the same image over and over instead of iterating. Whereas on paper I just make a mark and move on.

My video was made to show off just how diverse, fresh, and exciting Zimbabwe’s skate scene is becoming. Harare, my city, doesn’t have a park and we are fundraising. Please help us do this y’all. You can donate or share with your local skaters and shops! tributejar.com/campaign/har... #Zimbabwe
