I was just thinking about how the rent freeze means I’ll have more money to spend eating out at restaurants, going to bars, seeing a movie, and buying things at the small businesses near my apartment. Seems great for the local economy, except for my landlord, who is already worth $10+ million.
New York City’s business elites are long accustomed to direct access to City Hall, where even Democratic mayors felt the need to court the city’s wealthiest and most influential corporate leaders. That access is getting shredded by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
In other Michigan news, the state looks set to elect it's first transgender lawmaker. Joanna Whaley won her Democratic primary and will compete in November for a state house seat, beating a primary opponent who tried and failed to disqualify her for not running under her deadname
I have been looking at ironing boards because the asbestos of mine disintegrated & the new iron-stand I bought is not satisfactory so if the one you mentioned has a sensible place to put the iron I would be interested in buying it.
finally, something more ridiculous than being the only person to like one’s own posts
When you get so mad you screencap your own posts and tell yourself that it’s a banger and you’re not being made fun of.
I feel this is calling out every Republican Lincoln Project, Bulwark, Never Trumper who contributed to the GOP over the past 50 years and has not voiced any apologies for setting the groundwork that led to Trump
This level of spending actually makes me deeply angry. Let's never do this again in a primary ok
Unfathomable
I’m telling you this as a political scientist. The person who is electable is the one who is elected. This can and does change over time. Any and all speculation about “electability” is either puffery or anxiety and is often both.
One way to be safe is to never write an electability take
So we're clear here: Brad Lander, who is Jewish, defeated Daniel Goldman, who is also Jewish, by a 2-to-1 margin in a district where close to 40% of the electorate was Jewish. Fred Guttenberg declares this is antisemitism. It's okay to just openly acknowledge the man is deeply unwell.
Gotta love the “or stocks” part. Like Gemini realized its first answer was nuts so it tried to wedge in a better one.
Each of these incidents in a heavily Jewish Queens neighborhood was alarming to learn about. Now the same person has been charged in both — one of them as a hate crime — putting the speeding-vehicle death of journalist Cara Trager in a new and chilling light.

A fatal car crash, an unsolved murder and attacks on Jewish establishments have put a Queens community on edge

Also a reminder that when it comes to “vote blue no matter who” Dan Goldman can very politely sit down and shut up because we can point to his own refusal to endorse Mayor Mamdani as one of the reasons he lost so badly to Lander.
Dan Goldman is having an argument with Ro Khanna. Goldman is alluding to why he lost his primary, but isn’t saying it directly.
I've been to state GOP conventions and the repubs boast about how they're going to destroy Dems but then at the Dem cons they boast about working with the guys who want to destroy us. The whole sensible solutions thing doesn't work when the other side is running openly as the Klan.
I got in the habit of calling Dan’s office at least once a week to complain about something (his support for crypto, his pro police positions, his unconditional support for Netanyahu), and after he lost the primary this year I thought maybe I’d stop having reason to, but nope, just left a voicemail.
Deep shame on Dan Goldman, who misrepresents the Uncommitted movement and El-Sayed. El-Sayed ENDORSED HARRIS. Goldman got beat by 30 points in the NY-10 D primary for many reasons. This kind of thing is one of them.
What El-Sayed actually said about why he was voting for Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 election.
<cracking my knuckles> ok let’s do this Dan 1 & 2 here are things Brad Lander actually did, not just ideas he had 3 Dan voted with Republicans on awful crypto bills that made it easier for Trump to do crime 4 Dan voted for FISA 702 despite warnings it could be abused by Trump

"the voters in my district prioritized a different issue" yea, we didn't support genocide

I think that post you're responding to was sarcasm
This is the logical endpoint of the neoliberal model of education. They think that education is only about “getting a job” rather than actually being educated.
President Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/aaAEu6v

I don't think people are ready for this kind of joke yet.
Even to think about this from the most craven angle, people struggling to afford food and basic essentials means more petty crime like shoplifting, and I’d rather have my taxes going to subsidized discounts than more policing. Either way it is costing us.
Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.
counterpoint: I would really like it, actually, if my taxes went to subsidizing helpful services for those in need.

the obsession with trans women in sports is, apart from the abject bigotry, a symptom of how we take amateur sports participation way too seriously in this country.
People ask how Eric Adams got elected in the first place and well…
This plus the local media made it seem like the crime rate was out of control, specifically because Eric Adams was pushing the narrative and they were happy to play along with the idea of promoting former cop for mayor.
A video taken Saturday shows former NYC Mayor Eric Adams in sales pitch mode in Wisconsin Rapids, as he's heckled by residents opposed to the data center he's trying to sell them on. "My name is Eric Adams," he begins, as the boos begin to rain down. "You belong in prison!" one attendee shouts.
