Growing up in Hertfordshire in the 70s I remember it was a regular thing for farmers to stubble-burn their fields, clouds of smoke visible for miles. Can't imagine a farmer now looking at the freshly harvested ground and thinking "what this desiccated earth really needs is a match"...
