🚨 Unequal countries such as the UK lock up more people in prisons due to #inequality creating a harsher economic and social environment. Rates of imprisonment are a sign of social failure, the US being the most obvious example... ➡️ equalitytrust.org.uk/evidence-bas...

Vaccines. The types of vaccines available to prevent deadly childhood diseases has greatly increased along with their safety. Plus, we can develop a pandemic-stopping vaccine so quickly now. They’re almost miracles.
Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.
“…self determination…”? You mean, like a Voice?
Halfway through Closing the Gap Agreement: 3 of 19 targets on track, 4 getting worse. The Productivity Commission’s 2026 report is blunt about why — self-determination works where allowed to. Justice & child protection are where governments have refused to let go blakandblack.com/2026/08/05/t...
When we were at Buckaringa Gorge, @boyfrombruce.bsky.social saw a flock of cockatiels fly over. We hurried to the tree where they landed but they were then spooked by a kestrel so we only got a few distant shots before they fled. Still, it's always cool to see wild cockatiels! 😀 #birdsseenin2026
POLL: We in Australia have just received our Census forms! Please reply with what gender / sexuality I should report myself as being! (SPOILER: Something more interesting than cis-het) #auspol
Ugh. FWIW, I got my census form this morning, which for the first time asks whether we're queer, & if so, what flavour of queer we are. Despite being a very boring cis-het old man, I'm tempted to mark myself down as something more interesting just to fuck with the stats. #auspol
A few people have asked me to write a simple explainer about chronic inflammatory conditions like autoimmunity or allergy so here is an immunology 101 about what we understand about why they occur. Will dig into more research studies in a future post. Hope u enjoy

An overview of some of the ideas as to why some of us get chronic inflammatory diseases

I’ve had another hit to my baseline. So sorry to everyone I owe messages to. There’s not sufficient help and resources to manage what’s happening to me so I keep getting worse. This is the reality for many disabled people. The supports aren’t there. If you don’t have someone, you’re screwed
Absolutely one of my favorite songs that happens to come from one of my favorite bands-The Pixies. Coincidentally, this track comes from One of The Greatest Albums of All Time "Surfer Rosa"

Iggy Pop's Lust For Life at the start of Trainspotting. That film knew how to use its soundtrack.

Not sure if it's my favourite (I've only been awake for five minutes and am yet to even put my glasses on), but I've always been partial to the drop of instantly recognisable guitar from 'Blister In The Sun' by The Violet Femmes used at the end of Grosse Pointe Blank as they drive away together

'You Can Leave Your Hat On' by Tom Jones in The Full Monty finale. Great use of song, tongue in cheek and very British

Bravo to the year 11 students doing hospitality cert III prac from a commercial kitchen. As one of the 'guests', I reckon this would hold up pretty well on Masterchef! 👏😋

I am so triggered by RJK Jr's comment about ICU's being empty during #COVID. I re-read what I wrote after one of the surges. How do others forget. The trauma was--and is--real.

Look, this is an extremely basic and incredibly on-brand answer but when Wake Up by Rage Against the Machine kicks in at the end of the first Matrix movie it makes me feel like I could fight an adult gorilla and win

Life without painkillers means lying down, all day, all night. Basically I flop around on the couch like a dying fish. Can’t do anything else. It was bad enough before, but this is definitely worse. This isn’t a life, it’s torture. I’m out of 6 of 13 scripts. Too sick to get help. Life sucks.
Even I’m sick of my own whinging, but if the government is going to neglect me to death, I’ll be going out kicking and screaming. Fuck going quietly. People shouldn’t be neglected like this.
Wednesday Take it as it comes but I'll head into the hospital to see mum (who is starting to get a little cabin fever now she's well again) and hopefully get her out for sunshine and coffee again

Europe shuts nuclear power plants due to drought. Now imagine putting nuclear power plants on the driest inhabited continent on earth 🙄
I'm really sad this afternoon to learn of the death of Leo Koziol (Ngāti Rakaipaaka, Ngāti Kahungunu), founder + director of the Wairoa Māori Film Festival, champion of Māori storytelling. I first met him way back in Planet mag days in the early 90s, and even then he always had something on the go.
Suicide is the absence of hope. Hope that the pain will subside. Hope that you aren’t all alone. Hope that there are better days ahead. As long as there is life, there is always hope. With death, all hope is truly lost. Please don’t ever give up hope on yourself.
