“I have to carve the gargoyles, because I can carve nothing else; I leave to others the angels and the arches and the spires.” —G.K. Chesterton "Qui plume a, guerre a." No "AI", fascism Banner image text: THE BEST SAFETY DEVICE IS A CAREFUL MAN

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

Yet again, the Game UI Database is being scraped to the point that it's getting knocked offline. Even Cloudflare's "I'm under attack" mode isn't working. I just wanted to create a resource for real designers. I'm getting so fucking sick of this.

ICE BEHIND THE MASKS HAVE NAMES 2 masked agents threatened to arrest Robert Peck for legally observing them. He sued. “And now, because of a lawsuit, the (ICE) agents have names.” A Hylton 📌Nicholas Lapointe 📌Christopher Semler I hope more people take ICE to court when their rights are violated.

I sensed it but not enough to articulate at the time, but the "poptimism" trend always struck me as being less about bringing down elitist barriers and more about inverting them. Going from "Oh, you don't listen to Bartok? Tsk tsk" to "YOU MUST KNOW THIS TAYLOR SWIFT JAM, YOU ASSHOLE."

At the end of 2024, I stumbled into @shadowtodd.bsky.social’s year-end (worst?) pop singles review. It was smart and insightful and funny. And I didn’t know 80% of the songs / artists. I’m a music fan, and have loved rock and pop and hip-hop my whole life, but that was a wake-up call.

Google Gemini says that @jevinwest.bsky.social and I aren't to be trusted because in our first lecture, we had a playful example where Jevin presented data the same way that Tim Cook did, and I called bullshit on it. It hallucinates criticism and the only citations are to the lecture itself.

1. The "Explosive Growth" Slide ControversyIronically, the most direct and explicit example of this occurred during their very first "Calling Bullshit" lecture at the University of Washington. The Setup: Jevin West presented a slide to the class showing a graph that purported to show the "explosive, hockey-stick growth" of web traffic to their new Calling Bullshit website. The graph utilized standard marketing axes and compressed timeframes to make the project look like an unmitigated, runaway viral sensation. The "Bullshit": Carl Bergstrom actually had to step in and call "bullshit" on his own co-instructor's slide. When the data was displayed honestly without selective axis truncation or creative smoothing, it showed that while traffic was high initially, it heavily ebbed, flowed, and plateaued over time. The Criticism: While some praised this as a playful, planned pedagogical moment to show that "anyone can fall prey to bad data framing," critics viewed it as a perfect illustration of the double standard: when it serves a personal or professional promotional narrative (like proving your own course is a massive success), the temptation to use flawed, hype-driven metrics is incredibly high.

Tonight's haunt was St Albans Sanatorium House of Shadows! Actual old mental institution, luckily, "no scares on stairs" because there are a lot of them! Fantastic haunt, pretty long, and a lot of fun. I don't normally get scared but one bit made me actually back up a couple of steps!

I think there's somebody else here ...Needs work!
