I mean, postdoc unionization probably didn't make sense in a world where a postdoc was a stepping stone to a tenure-track position. That has been not the case for decades
Two of the rhetorical tricks of union-busters right there: 1) respectability politics. stressing the snob appeal of "professional" vs. manual labor, and of unions as low class and a threat to that status; 2) pretending the workplace is characterized by "amity" between boss and workers, and an...
Using fast-food employees as an object of offhand ridicule is really, really wrong. Snobby, elitist, mean-spirited. And extremely common. Let's try not to do that anymore.
It’s funny his ignorance. Michelangelo was upgraded to artist in pay after a year, mostly had artists assist him at the Sistine Chapel, and mostly didn’t run a studio with formal apprentice. Ghirlandaio’s workshop, where Michelangelo apprenticed, is the example he wants.
"bespoke" is an interesting way to spell "exploitative"
i would simply yoke the humanities to the sciences, so scientists could get through an essay without tripping on their dicks

Amazon had 80/20 ground beef on sale for $1.99 a pound today. Yesterday it was $6.99. Normally, when it goes on sale, it's $5.00. I asked Alexa where it was sourced. They said, "I don't have access to that information."

Cool, cool, I have a couple quick questions -- who's in charge of preventing food-induced illnesses right now and how good a job are they doing?
RFK Jr defends measles: "In 10 years, there have been 3 measles deaths in America. There are now about 1.2 million deaths every year from food-induced illness. The media and certain demagogic politicians are constantly trying to scare us about infectious disease."
I was just hit by a wave of total despair upon the realization that presumably for the rest of my life I will have to be aware of every crackpot because thanks to the collapse of gatekeeping today's crackpot could be tomorrow's cabinet secretary.
It's absolutely a problem that colonialism/imperialism created and perpetuate, but you can't just wave a magical buzzword at it and expect it to keep people from starving or dying of AIDS by virtue of its political alignment.
Mutual aid is local and relationship-based. If you don't have local resources, who exactly is supposed to be doing the aiding? (And I ask this as someone who is very much interested in mutual aid frameworks as a mode of localized resistance and resilience)
This is also why I really don't care for how an increasing number of people on both the left and the right (and in between) now claim that mutual aid is *better* than existing aid organizations, and therefore we don't really need to prioritize saving them.

A lot of arbitrary hoops to jump through that will discourage a lot of people, so not unmitigated good news But good news nonetheless
