FWIW, both of VDARE’s founders were on the masthead of the National Review in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Peter Brimelow was also a staffer for Senator Orrin Hatch. This white nationalist thread has been present in the conservative movement for a long time. Screenshot is from 1997.

I've just taken a very quick look on my phone but at first glance the drop in “perceived decline“ in free expression is disturbingly, if predictably, polarized on party lines: Rs show only slight decline compared to 10 years ago while Ds dropped by more than 30 percentage points

great thread by Jeremy, and I think this element is exceptionally hard for a finance-heavy industry and investment space to grasp at times— for many many people, money isn’t an effective eraser of doubts. It might increase willingness in some cases, but it can also paradoxically fuel resistance.

Last thing: It's not enough for residents to get an improved tax base or even direct payments. This is a unique situation where folks specifically disapprove of the product. They want to be proud of the product.

And so this question of: Yeah, you guys are going to create these very tangible impacts and, to their view, harms, on specific communities that are not the communities benefiting from this technology — at least they don’t see the benefits yet — they don’t see the cancer cures, they don’t see themselves getting these $10 million salaries that the A.I. researchers are getting. I think it feels to a lot of these folks like they are pawns in some tech billionaire’s game, and they do not like to feel that way.

Looks like a 10-15 point polling miss in Michigan regardless of who wins. And people have been writing a lot of electability takes using this data. It’s dangerous out there folks be safe
