RIP Ted White. Ted was asst editor at F&SF from 1963-68, where he also contributed fiction and book reviews. His editorials in the Feb and Mar '66 issues speak w/ feeling about the frustrations and joys of reading slush, and discovering writers like Larry Niven and Tom Disch. He loved great stories.
Ted White, former editor of HEAVY METAL magazine, AMAZING STORIES, and FANTASTIC magazine passed away today, at the age of 88. He wrote the 1968 CAPTAIN AMERICA novel, THE GREAT GOLD STEAL. www.facebook.com/groups/corfl...

The 2008 Depression taught me that as soon as people start asking "Are we in a recession?" the answer is that we've actually been in a recession for some time, it's just that no one wants to acknowledge it. The mass layoffs the last 2 years have already resulted in more job losses than 2008.
‘politeness is not really the problem.’ Yes.
This interview with the great @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social was a "wow" moment for me. Thanks, New York Times and David Marchese. www.nytimes.com/2026/03/07/m... I couldn't help noticing the question that seemed the most Times-like to me.
This is a heartbreaking story of an author with Long Covid being awarded a prize with draconian promo requirements... and not being given any disability accommodations. Shit like this is why I wrote "Laser Eyes Ain't Everything".
This broke my heart and made me laugh today. No one ever really makes art for a living. When you make art for a living, what you actually mean is you answer emails and do promo for a living. The art itself occupies increasingly atomized periods of time. paperpools.blogspot.com/2026/04/we-l...
I have space available in my editing calendar, and I'd love to fill these spots. I do developmental editing of novels and novellas. More info and contact link here: www.kathowardbooks.com/editing

Good literary translation requires understanding (language, culture, genre--on both sides of the translation) and an ability to write well. "AI" can't do that. There are no shortcuts. Treat your work and foreign language readers with the respect they deserve. You won't fool anyone with this.
Amazon has launched a new AI-driven translation service, Kindle Translate, for Kindle Direct Publishing authors 👇 #BookSky

The smaller players are acting with the courage and righteousness that the bigger and more powerful entities all lack. What is the point of money, influence and power if you're not going to use them to do the right thing? Why does wealth reduce men into simpering cowards? Thoughts, Bob Iger?
New: 404 Media is suing ICE. We have filed a lawsuit demanding ICE release its $2 million contract with Paragon, a company that makes powerful spyware to break into phones and read encrypted messages. This is expensive for a small outlet but this info is important www.404media.co/were-suing-i...
As happens with every. Single. Pilot. Program. That ever looks at anything akin to UBI, it is cheaper to just straight up help people get to a modest financial baseline than to deal with the outcomes of not helping people in poverty. It’s not news until we deploy it at scale.
A program in Flint, MI, gave $1,500 to any/all pregnant people and $500/month for the first year of their infant’s life. Among the benefits, those babies experienced lower rates of prematurity and low birth weight, which resulted in fewer NICU admissions, saving the city of Flint $6.2 million/year.

Update: we just received a statement from Macmillan/Tor taking full responsibility for failing to register copyright, promising to make us whole and pay us any settlement money we lost out on due to that error, and promising to find & correct the lapses that caused this. Every pub should do this.
this part right here is gonna create massive resentment in the industry. the copyright registration system and the fact that you apparently have to pay a bonus fee for protection from big companies pirating your work (and that tons of publishers never paid the bonus fee...)
1. Here's the motion for preliminary approval of the settlement in Bartz v Anthropic class action suit. Anthropic will pay $1.5 billion, an "estimated gross recovery of $3,000 per Class Work" & destroy the two datasets of pirated works once litigation ends storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

All I think about when I hear people say that it’s bad taste to dance on Hulk Hogan’s grave is that Emmett Till’s monument had to be replaced with a 500lb steel bulletproof monument because white people simply won’t stop riddling it with bullets. So now it just has tons of dents. From bullets.
So just to clarify: the government, seeking to restrict kids’ access to “harmful content” imposed an ID rule and now there’s been a mahoosive spike in VPN use. So now they’re thinking of banning VPNs…
