In interviews people sometimes ask me to sum up what was different for LGBT people in the early nineties when we first set up Pride Scotland. Thanks to @workingclasshistory.com for the reminder that the answer is "The press used to treat all LGBT people as badly as they now treat trans people."

www.arc.gov.au/news-and-pub... It's great to see the 2026 Version of the Australian Research Council's OA policy (updating their previous 2017 iteration) now includes OA books. The inclusion of OA books in more and more national policies speaks to the broad and growing interest in OA books.

Amnesty International put out a major report documenting the influence of UK based anti trans gender critical organizations and their funding. Within hours, GC groups threatened defamation lawsuits and Amnesty was forced to pull it down. Proving the point they're anti rights. Anyways, here it is.

Disappointingly this whole session appears to be about complaining about shadow libraries rather than discussing how we actually protect against cyberattacks: investing in in-house IT, building robust infrastructures, using more secure open source software rather than proprietary software. #UKSG2026

It is a little surprising that the vast majority of this session so far - which is listed as broadly on cyber security in the context of the British library incident - is on how dangerous and nefarious SciHub is.

Morning #UKSG2026 plenary about the Big 5 negotiations. I would love to see Jisc’s energies going into supporting collective funding and community-based publishing alternatives, alongside (preferably instead of!) inequitable negotiations with commercial behemoths. But that’s just me. 🤷‍♀️
