A rush of hot pride welled up in Suguru: pride in his story for earning such fright, and pride in the Witch for being so frightening. She had always been his favorite. Part of him was glad to share her with Satoru, who was already carving a place for himself in Suguru’s chest.

“No one knows for sure,” he said sagely. “She can take all sorts of shapes. Sometimes she’s a fox, sometimes she’s a bird, sometimes she’ll play a hunter or an old, twisted crone. But you can always tell it’s her by the color of her hair. Or her fur, or her feathers. Whatever coat she’s wearing, it’s always, always white.”

Satoru’s face drained of color. He curled in on himself, pulling at his cowl till it was tight around his head. “And—you think she’s a monster?”'

It curves, the body of this thing, a long serpentine tail looping around Suguru’s ankles, twisting in a soft trap. White scales stipples up to a human male torso, where smooth skin builds lines of muscles. Broad and long, the rest of it imitates humanity — but this isn’t what draws Suguru’s attention. He lifted a foot, found a hold, brought a hand up to the ledge, and tensed when his foot slipped. The ledge trembled. A dragging sound of rock on rock shredded the air, his foot dropped, and he nearly followed it before he found his feet on solid ground… about a meter higher than where the ground had been moments ago.
Satoru steadied himself and let his eyes drop down to the unnaturally smooth rock that now held his weight. It was dry with the start of condensation beginning to darken the grey material. He heard a tap against the rocks above him and Satoru jolted upward, the dragging of rock-on-rock that much louder.
As the rocks beneath his feet moved unnaturally beneath him, he listened to the sound of stone grinding on stone while Suguru shifted the mountain into place.
Was Suguru trying to seduce him? He certainly felt seduced.

“Woah. What, does the mountain just do what you want? Makes me wonder if Naiads can alter the path of a river if they want.”
He wasn’t brought all the way up to the ledge by the shifting stone, leaving a step for him to take. As he stood at his full height, Suguru did too. Stunned, Satoru blinked down at his feet with lips slightly parted and raised eyebrows.

Satoru would know that voice anywhere. He could pick it out among a thousand others, even if Suguru wasn’t shouting over the gasps of the crowd. Cursing over the gasps of the crowd, actually.

It’s a break with etiquette that’s entirely out of character for Suguru. On any other occasion, Satoru might find it funny. Maybe they can laugh about it later; he’ll pull up the replay and watch Suguru turn tomato red at the sound of himself swearing like a sailor on live TV in front of the whole wide world.

He isn’t the only one swearing. All around him, voices rise in outrage at what is the most egregious case of underscoring Satoru has ever seen at an Olympic halfpipe final.

After he crashes out of the pipe four weeks before the Winter Olympics, Satoru finds himself pushing the limits of his body like never before. If he wants to defend his title, he'll have to soar to yet greater heights — but will he fly or will he fall?
